Japan orders 80 F/A-22 Raptors!!

I'm all for maintaining the status quo and opening direct flights between shanghai, taipei, and Beijing. It's ridiculous to have to fly south to HK or Macau just to fly north to Shanghai, a 90 minute trip turned in to a 3-5 hour trip with layover. Imagine the economic opportunities if that were to happen. Shuttle flights to and from Taipei/Shanghai every 15 minutes like those between Boston and NY. All this is just wishful thinking under Chen.

Japan is cooperating closely with the United States on anti-ballistic missile technology and is probably going to serve as a linchpin in the US' ABM network given Japan's geographic proximity to some of the baddies, which benefits Japan as well obviously. If we're sharing that kind of technology (ie., the ability to hit a bullet with a bullet, no small feat), I'd say it's a given that we'll share the technology behind the F-22. Further, the Japanese are unlikely to share our technology with anyone else, unlike the Israelis or even the Europeans with the EU and their growing European Defense Force ideas (excepting the Brits).

Just saw a news flash...
Looks like both Japan and Germany will become permanent UN SC members.

Source?? I see nothing on CNN, MSNBC, BBC, or Le Monde.

China CCTV 4 News
Just a rumor about China might agree to let Japan become permanent SC member.

Seriously doubt it unless they both sustain significant international deployments long term and invest in their militaries, much moreso Germany than Japan. Germany's armed forces are a joke relative to its economy. If that doesn't change, they don't deserve a seat.

Topic Summary: Will President Bush grant their wish?

Of course. Have to keep the "Defense" Co's busy. Pretty much the only "Manufacturing" the U.S. has left.

Yeah, our $10 trillion economy doesn't manufacture much.

My guess is they ask the DOD if they can buy them before they order them. So if they ordered 80 of them that means they have gotten an OK from US govt.

No it doesn't, of course they count the imported stuff as part of the Economy here, all part of the Republican way of doing math.

So quick with the exaggerations, DMC! We make LOTS of things, including cars, electronics of various sorts, furniture, LOTS of stuff! Where I work we (and by We I mean those guys out in the manufacturing area who have a clue about such things. I just run the network) make parts for aircraft of every flavor!

I'd sell them to Japan, but only if the USA could install a secret device that would allow the US military to disable the Raptors in the event the Japanese tried to use them against the USA.

If they did, would they tell us? 😕

Would you? 🙂 I wouldn't, personally. However, I have no problems with selling these to Japan. In the 60 years since WWII they've evolved into a vary civilized nation of intelligent, reasonable people. A bit weird, to be sure, but then, I am sure they think we're pretty odd too 🙂

Radar invisible Kamikazes w00t!

Seriously though, this country is practically run by the defense contractors. Eisenhower warned us did he not? Yeah we'll at least sell them dumbed down versions, if for nothing else than the sheer profit. And IIRC the ban on Japan building an offensive military expired in 2000.

Why are they having problems with the F-2? It's not exactly a difficult concept. It's just a freakin' F-16. And if they thought THAT was complicated, wait till they try the F-22. But hey, if Japan would rather pay 8 billion dollars on top of the money they've already paid, let em.

Better make sure the Raptor works as good as it is supposed to before they buy them. Otherwise they might be better off buying up F-16/F-15 or even taking a look at Su-37's

Man, 80 raptors. That is a big order though... Japan learned a valuable lesson in WWII and has since show a great deal of responsbility. I think we should give them the Raptors or maybe suggest they get some other really nice fighter from us.

So can't they just wait for the JSF?

Someone made a good point though... F22 is more interceptor/air-to-air, so it would be really good for Japan since I doubt they plan any offensive manuevers

nothing new, they build modified f16s and such under liscence. their military budget is rather high too..might as well help support the development of our advanced weaps. not too many other countries u could trust with the f222 anywyas

The jsf is more like the f-16 than the f-22.

Strk, maybe you can remind us who has Russia bombed into the stone age lately (or even not so lately)? In fact, this is our own policy: starting with Dresden, and going through Hiroshima, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, and Iraq. In fact, we openly boasted that we "will bomb Yugoslavia into the stone age". If China wanted to get Taiwan, they could do it in less time than to say "ni hao". The truth is they don't want to, and are just biding their time.

Japan is a different matter, and having the lunatics in North Korea nearby must give them the shivers. The F-22 is exactly the plane they need, as the Russians don't have anything comparable to offer (and will not have in the next 5-10 years). They have some nice planes on the drawing board, but no money to develop them.

How will the F-22 deter lunatics with nuclear missiles? An ageis cruiser with Standard-3 missiles would be a more appropriate counter. I saw on the news today that a test was sucessful and the system is now 5 hits for 6 tries 🙂

I think they already got Aegis cruisers and are probably working on TMD too.

But is the US government willing to share top of the line equipment and classified technology with other countries, even if it is its closest ally in Asia?

I don't trust the Japanese. Last time we shared sensitive info with them, Toshiba sold it to the Soviets. IF anything, we should sell the finished product only to the government.
