Microcenter has the D-Link DWL 500 11MBPS Wireless Card for $49.99 after $50.00 MIR.

This card is actually the DWL 650 PCMCIA Card with the desktop PCI adapter included.

Thus you can use this with your desktop or laptop.

Normally a PCMCIA card is $99.99 and the PCI adapter is ~$40.00, so you save $90.

I don't know if the card is any good, but its a great price.

Rebate info:
It is a manufacturer rebate, only good on purchases at Microcenter. Thus no PM possible.
One per household/address (watch out for Microcenter printing your name on the reciept in the B&M if you buy 2)

Anybody use this card before? Is it any good?

Edit:
I have this in my hands right now.

Question 1: Is this confirmed?

Answer: This is confirmed. There is a display with a sign advertising this, and it is also available online under networking adapters.

Question 2: Is this really detachable? I.e. is this two pieces (one PCMCIA, and one PCI to PCMCIA adapter)

Answer: Yes absolutely. I opened the box and inside are a DWL 650 wireless PCMCIA Card, and a PCI to PCMCIA adapter.

Have you verified that the current shipping DWL-500 has a removeale PCMICA card ? We have a couple purchased about a year ago and the PCMCIA card cannot be removed from those. The hard plastic antenna that is normally included with the standalone DWL 650 PCMCIA card is not present on ours. In lieu of the hard plastic antenna there is a mini-coax extending out to a hard plastic antenna that is riveted to the PPCI card bracket and PCB. The PCMCIA card is in an actual PCMCIA card slot on the PCI PCB, but there is also a metal shield soldered over the PC card with a sticker that says "warranty void if removed". Perhaps they sreamlined the design since then to lower costs by using interchangeable components. Can anyone who purchased the DWL-500 recently verify the new design? Thanks:)

I have installed the DWL-650 card on a couple of machines and it works quite nicely, in fact I did not notice a difference to my Orinoco Gold (- the Orinoco Software is nicer though). The card alone is usually $90 or so but can sometimes be found for about $70 - therefore $50 would be hot. If this in fact includes the PCI adapter then this is sizzling :)

Hmm... All it says is the antenna is non-detachable, which can be true whether or not the PC card is detachable from the PCI adapter...

after tax and shipping, and the fact that thier checkout is a royal pain, i'll hold off, hot if you live near a store maybe.

if you do get this, you could buy with blue, and PM the $99 price to a lower one

BE CAREFULL

When I ordered my SMC wireless card from Buy.com they mistakenly sent me the pci +pcmcia version... It had the do not remove sticker, but since I need the pcmcia I put it in and it didn't work too well... Seems that they made a different card for the pci version to use 3.3 volts where the pcmcia version uses 5 volts. (or vice versa I can't rememeber)
Since SMC and DLINK both by the chipset from the same place you could have the same problem.:Q

i have the DWL-500 PCI card 802.11b and rest assured, the pcmcia card is very easy detachable. just pull the sucka out. I use the pcmcia card in my laptop and the pci card adapter is rotting away in my closet.

Very nice deal. The cheapest I could find the card alone was $63 previously. I had ordered it, but had to return it when it would not operate correctly with my other 802.11b devices. I read something somewhere that the DWL-650 has a voltage quirk that might cause improper operation. The drivers would install and say its working properly, but when I tried to ping an ip, it would never respond. Hopefully mine was just a lemon, I'm sure the card is very good, being based on the intersil prism2 chipset and all.

I tried the D-Link before ordering an Orinoco Gold. I had horrible connectivity 15 ft from my SMC Barricade. With the Orinoco Gold, I can go anywhere in the house. I can't recommend this card.
