i installed an smc barricade with a few netgear usb adapters and they work great. even across the house, behind closed doors. 900mhz phones sometimes interferes.

anyways, anyone know if theres a site with a chart or something that shows which cards are more compatible with which routers? i know theyre all 802.11 or whatever but i still hear some work better than others. linksys, netgear, smc, hawking, actiontec etc come to mind..

Installed my DWL-500 card in my desktop PC tonight.

Unfortunately, Windows XP does not have built-in drivers like I somewhat imagined. Judging from the new devices in Device Manager, this looks like a generic PCI->PCMCIA bridge card. The install manual does warn against using other cards in the PCI adapter, but I suspect that's normal marketing speak. I'd still like to know the official answer to this as I'm willing to pick up an Orinoco Gold at the right price if it'll drop in.

Dlink.com doesn't have Winblows XP drivers either. What gives?

Are the rest of you using the W2K drivers?

I'm just about ready to reboot into Linux and try it out on my primary OS. Speaking of Linux, the drivers on D-Link's website seem to be antiquated and compatible with Linux 2.2.x. You'll want to download Linux wlan-ng drivers to compile on 2.4.x. At least that's my conclusion so far.

I won't really know until tomorrow how it all works out.

I still need VPN software for Lose-dows. I can use FreeSWAN and SSH for Linux.

Download the XP Drivers for the DWL-650 (the PCMCIA CARD).

I assume the PCI card is just a generic and Windows XP knows how to use it... If you have the drivers for the PCMCIA card.

My friend is using it flawlessly on an XP system.

But he did not that the drivers were not bundled with the system, that he had to download them.

I believe Microcenter will ship the item with the rebate form. If it arrives without one, PM me and I'll see if I can scan the rebate an send it to you...

My brother just e-mailed me and said that somewhere out there on the web are places that tell you how to hack the frequencies of these and thus amplify the signal by using non fcc approved frequencies for these cards. I.e. you might be able to have your network running on the same frequency as a local AM radio station (hence why it isn't approved, as your entire block might not beable to hear that station) as apposed to the approved home frequency band.

Anybody know anything about this?

Here's a link on a way to hack your WAP11 (wireless router from Linksys). I guess it also works on the Netgear ME102 and SMC MC2655W. Unfortunately I have the BEFW11S4.

Description on wi2600.org:
Fun With the WAP11

And a nice discussion about it on DSLreports.com
Revved up WAP11

Let me know if anyone figures out how to boost the output of a BEFW11S4. Thanks.

EDIT: Here is a link to another rebate from dlink directly, Microcenter is not included and there are quite a few of stores that are omitted from the offer so be careful. Thought it might be useful if the card was purchased elsewhere. The actual Microcenter rebate that I scanned is two posts up.

DRS, that link is to a rebate that is not valid for this purchase, (in the list of stores that it is not valid at include Microcenter), and is only for $10.00. I would recoment that you remove it as it is worthless for this deal.

Thanks

Turn on your Private Messaging. I have just picked up the BEFW11S4 and was wondering if you like it?

If anyone getting this deal doesn't need the PCI adapter... please sell it to me for cheap :) I need a PCMCIA to PCI adapter for my wireless card. PM with a reasonable price if you're interested.

Thanks.

I provided the second link in case anyone pricematches it to another store that is not on the omission list. The first rebate link that I scanned is the one for Microcenter.

BTW I just got back from Best Buy and they had, even though it is not on their webpage, quite a few DWL-500. I came in with the ad and they pricematched Microcenter's price after rebate plus 10%. So I walked out of there paying less than $100 for two of them. I live in Columbus Ohio so YMMV.

Thanks.

:Q They pricematched the after rebate price?! Anyone else have luck with this?

What newspaper is the ad found in? Today's or the weekend's?

Don't forget to use your Amex Blue and PM to lowest price at Pricewatch for ~$90 to get $10 back. =)

Maybe DRS could post a copy of his reciept from best buy, as I was unaware that they would PM after rebate prices...

That would make the deal better, not having to wait for the rebate...

Here is a scan of my Best Buy Receipt.

I chose to talk with one of the computer sales staff rather than match it with the cashier, thats why the receipt is yellow.

Why do these cards claim to be 11MB when the review shows on an average of 4.6 MB throughput? Am I missing something here?

You get the rebate in-store. MicroCenter got sick of everyone asking "where's the rebates" so they put a computer terminal in every store that allows you to search via SKU. All you do is type the SKU from the box into the SKU search box and the product info plus a link "popup rebate" should be there. Click the "popup rebate" link and an Acrobat window should open. Click print, and a copy of the rebate should print out from the printer underneath the terminal.

Just to make things clear, this is a Microcenter-only rebate. It clearly says so.

That's a good deal from MicroWarehouse. They don't have a PCI adapter like the D-Link card, so it's almost as good. Too bad MicroWarehouse sucks. They've been around for many years, and I had some bad experiences with them a long time ago. So they won't be getting my business..

So can anyone tell me if this is the DWL 500 or 650? The site had DWL-500 and does not mention the 650. What gives? Also, I want to use this on XP and according to the site it is not supported, but the 650 is. Any comments?

This DWL-500 is a DWL-650 PC Card + a PCI adapter. The PCI adapter is recognized natively by WinXP. Download the DWL-650 drivers, and point to them when the New Hardware Wizard pops up.

You'll configure the wireless LAN using WinXP tools, as these appear to be drivers-only, and no client utils.

I installed mine yesterday, and according to WinXP, was getting terrible signal strength from less than 50 feet away (granted line-of-sight is not clear).

Now I'm thinking about an Orinoco Gold if it'll work in the D-Link PCI adapter. Anyone know?

Anyone have suggestions on if this will work in a dense apartment complex, with my roomie living above me. This means no line-of-sight. I'm also worried about all of the cordless phones in the complex.

I'm trying to find an inexpensive way to share DSL/Cable.

Mr brother lives in the house next door to me (both ranch style houses, about 30 feet apart) and my d-link access point signal reaches his house fine! Now his daughter has her own laptop in her room. When she's there, she can't get the signal from the access point (I guess b/c there's too many walls in between). We just tested it by swapping the wireless card from my brother's computer (so we only have one wireless card right now) Anyone suggest the best way for the daughter to tap into the connection? Should he get another access point? Or will an additional wireless card be all that's needed? thanks

I belived they are operate on 2.4GHz radio frequency. No line of sight is neccessary. Since they are in the same frequency as 2.4GHz cordless phone, you might have to be careful. Some interruption might accure.
