I actually have this and the cisco aironet 350 card & I can't tell the difference b/w the two. I would highly recommend this considering the cisco card is 5x as expensive!!

The question for me is should I jump on this now or wait till I get my system build up and running. Hmmmmmm...

I already got in on the Belkin wireless router ap with free PCMCIA card @ cusa for $149. (for my lappy)

I'm guessing this would be compatible.

hmmmm....what to do, what to do.

I hope this isnt too far from the topic. I'm looking for a wireless connection for my dsl internet service. What else would I need to buy to link two or possibly three computers together to share internet access in my home? Would I need a different router to run 3 systems instead of two? I know how to build systems but I havent gotten into networking yet so excuse my ignorance.

Don't waste your time since D-Link wireless cards do not support Windows CE so you can use them with your iPAQ. As an alternate and a bett solution IMO get the DCF-650W CF 802.11B adapter. It uses far less power than the DWL-650 and all you need is the iPAQ CF sleeve to use it.

Thanks uwannawhat! It makes more sense now and with a little trial and error I'll figure it out.

Addition Info:

Reabte:
1) Must be aquired after purchase is made at the Microcenter service/returns counter, or I presume it will be in you box when the item is shipped.
It is not online, nor anywhere publicly viewable that I know of.

2) Limit one per household/address. Which mean you may need to ask Microcenter to not print your name and address on the reciept if your buying 2 or more and buying instore.

this is for wireless networking and is useful only if you have an access point.

This is for wireless networking.

It works without an access point, just not as well as with an access point (I believe a weaker signal is the problem)

Thanks for the heads up, GetReal. But, are you sure it won't work w/ the Ipaq? According to this article, Wireless Compatibility Chart it should work with a minor tweak. However, I've decided to hold off getting one for now. If I can get a *cheap* wireless CF nic, it would save me the cost of buying a pc sleeve.

Last time I checked using unsupported drivers from a different manufacturer and "tweaking the OEMsetup.inf does not qualify as compatiability or support. D-Link officially says it does not supoort Windows CE in any of its wireles products except their CF 802.11B adapter. There are many 802.11b PCMCIA cards that alreay support Windows CE so why would anyone want to take this approach.

PS - I like the disclaimer on that site saying that they will not be responsible for damage to your equipment due to the use of other manufacturers' drivers that may result from an incorrect driver supllying the incorrect voltages to your PC card.

Could someone please let me know if the PCI Desktop Adapter will only work with this D-Link wireless card, or if it will work with other brands of wireless PCMCIA cards? Also, does anyone know any other deals or prices on PCI Desktop Adapters?

At this point, I'm leaning towards the Orinoco Silver at overstock.com, but even if I get the Orinoco, I also need a PCI Desktop Adapter. If PCI Desktop Adapters go for about $50, then I might as well go for this deal and get an extra wireless card.

Shameless bump....

This should be compatable with any 802.11B wireless system, as long as you have permission to access the system. My buddy has his system protected somehow so that it actually won't let me on, unless he adds me to the system.

If you put a wireless card in your desktop, you could share your internet connection with another computer that had a wireless card.

Anything you can do with a regular wired 10/100 pci or pcmcia network card, you can do with this...

Only no wires.

I wish I knew the answer to this question as well. The key is that there are two types of PCI adapters, one is a generic PCI->PCMCIA bridge, that is fairly compatible across devices. The other is something I've seen referred to as PLX.

I might know for sure once I install the card in my Linux box, since wireless LAN support for Linux is quite new, and you have to roll it yourself.

Also, it's unclear whether the Orinoco cards drop into generic PCI->PCMCIA bridge cards successfully. Somebody around here has got to know. ;)

Incidentally, why is the Orinoco Silver so popular? It seems limited to 64-bit WEP. Now I know that WEP isn't actually a secure protocol, but I'd rather get 128-bit WEP for my money.

But yeah, I picked up two of the D-Link DWL-500s because I figured that you simply can't get a PC card + PCI adapter anywhere near $58.xx after tax/MIR at this time. And I'm just not a fan of USB for networking (USB is okay for low throughput input devices).

Finally, what VPN (I assume IPsec based) software is everyone going to be using?
