And there you have it. We don't know for certain any details other than the fact that the R600 release date WAS pushed back. Saying things like "Wonder what they missed this time around" without anything to back it up is pure conjecture, nothing else. I'm just as interested as the next person to find out the reason for this delay, but I'm willing to wait for facts to be released before proclaiming that it was faulty engineering that caused it.

Unless you're buying into ATI/AMD's press release citing the delay for "strategic" reasons, the only possible answer is faulty engineering. Low performance, low yields, low clock speeds all point to faulty engineering. There's nothing strategic about delaying a delayed launch, they're delaying because the R600 silicon they've got right now runs like a big fat lemon.

I trust ATI's PR about as much as I do Nvidia's or that from any other company. PR department's goal is to sell their product and to keep their competitor's from selling. And that doesn't exactly encourage them to follow the "truth in advertising" guidelines.

There's a difference (at least to me) between faulty engineering and low performance, yields or clock speeds. A product can be totally fault-free yet not live up to its expectations.

lol you could take that approach but that'd just be naive. Anyone who's been in the game longer than a week knows why we see delays and paper launches and what causes them. Its because the product isn't ready or it isn't up to snuff. Its that simple. Seeing as you've been around since 1999 one would think you wouldn't be so naive to think it could be "anything."

I don't discount any possibility. It could very well be faulty engineering. Or it could be a supply problem. Or it could a desire to get higher clock speeds. Maybe the R600 needs a respin in order to compete with the G80. Or maybe ATI wanted to have the first retail video card with a 1GHz GPU so they're ramping up production of the A15 silicon instead of the A12 revision and that is what is causing the delay.

But until we get some solid facts, shifting the blame TOWARDS ATI faulty engineering (as keys was doing) is wrong as well.
 
I lurk on these forums a lot. I wonder why some of the people act like know it all jerks or just plain a-holes.

I also love comments like, "Why are you idiots surprised? I knew this would happen thanks to my superior knowledge/intelligence/above average member size."

To them I say, where were you during threads discussing news items like this:

I love how everyone is a genius after the fact.

Also to those 'gamers' who say stuff like,"You morons! There are no DX10 games out there!"... I say please go back to playing Hexen. DX10 cards are also the DX9 leaders. Games today like Vegas, Double Agent, NWN2 and even Oblivion don't run properly on anything below and 8800. Some of those games like Vegas don't even run well on the 8800!

I know, it must be global warming. Or Mercury isn't in line with Saturn and Mars. That MUST be it. Why don't you go ahead and list all the reasons you can think of for this Nth delay for the R600. And then we can tell you why they are or aren't valid legitimately. Because you don't know how to figure it out by yourself it would seem.
And you ARE trying to shift blame away from DAAMIT. That much is obvious.
 
This is a surprising and a very bad/sad news. I wonder what's happened at the stock market since this news hit. If anyone's good at stocks, please share your views.

I guess the after-effect of the merger (or buyout, whatever) is bigger than what everyone thought. (You know, when you don't know what's happening to your company you can't concentrate on your jobs, not to mention that you don't want to take responsibility for anything important) Let's hope AMD will recover as quickly as possible.
 
For sure. It was one of the biggest buyouts in financial history. I would give them more slack over this R600, but holy dammit this thing was ORIGINALLY slated for October 06.

First of all, Hexen is totally awesome. I loved that game.

Second of all, your last point it definately valid. I don't even plan to buy vista at all (definately not anytime soon...I'm mulling over the idea of reinstalling 2000) but these cards have me interested because their DX9 performance is really great.

As for everything else, Welcome to the video forum! 😛

It's no secret that AMD/AMD.ATI stock has been going down the rat hole for some time now. Yesterday it lost 2.5% but it's questionable whether that's a direct result of this news. The real problem is that the stock has lost 64% 🙂Q) of it's value in the last 12 months. Yikes.

we *don't know*

but logic leads us to realize it is a *serious issue* --probably way beyond "supply or clockspeed issues" or "ramping up a revision or a respin" ...

*None* of what you suggested is *enough* to delay a announced and scheduled hard launch
