Ok,

I've pretty much missed all the popular games in the last 2-3 years.
The main reason being lack of decent hardware.

I finally decided to bite the bullet and build 2 brand new PCs (1 for me and 1 for my GF)
What I'd like to do is go back and catch up on some of the big games I've missed, as well as play the newest big titles (HL2 / Doom3). I'm mainly looking for FPS's and Action Games.

The last games I was really into were GTA III & Vice City, prior to that I think the last game I played was the original Half Life & Counter Strike.

So far my wish list includes

HL2
Doom 3 (getting a free copy with my new Vide card)
BF 1942

What other titles should I be looking at?

Well, if you want to try strategy Rome: Total War is a great game (in my top 5 games of all time).

Pirates for some good fun.

Far Cry is an excellent FPS.

Call of Duty is another good FPS.

Doom iii is a really bad game . . . even for free. :p

. . . . to your list (yes - HL2!!!) add:

Thief - Deadly Shadows

Deus Ex - Invisible War

Max Payne - The Fall of Max Payne

Star Trek Voyager - Elite Forces II

That's the last 18 months of the cream of FPS . . . . how far back do you want to go?

For "older" add NOLF II and RtCW . . . . (Serious Sam II/ Max Payne . . .) . . . .

oh, yeah, don't forget Far Cry . . . (older - think Mafia) ;)

I liked the first Max Payne, so I'll probably try that.
Not a big fan of the Theif series (too much sneaking around )
Don't really like Star Trek either.
Definately would like to try Deux Ex.
I did like Mafia, so Far Cry is in there

oops, i was unclear (again) . . . . Far Cry is a great game (Mafia is a great older game - they are NOT alike).

Thief II is MUCH better than I and II if you don't like sneaking - you can "rambo" your way thru this one. ;)

Deus Ex I is a classic. II is very good (you NEED the patch) but very different than the original.

Voyager is the ONLY star trek i like. ;) the games are short (but bargain bin)

Max Payne II is very (very) good but not up to the original story (it tells too much).

If you want to keep your girlfriend then stay away from World of Warcraft. If you need an easy way to get rid of her then get it right now.

Thanks for the warning! Not really into that type of game though.

I'll admit it, I'm into single player games with lots of cheat codes!!

Yes.

But definitely D/L the demo (try nVidia's site) and see if YOU like it. ;)

Thanks!, I think I'm going to be downloading a lot of demos while I wait for my new hardware to arrive.

<edit> What is the difference between Painkiller demo 1 and demo 2?

I would definitely get..

HL2
Far Cry
Call of Duty
Freedom Fighters (worth the $10-15 you'll pay)
CS:CZ if you can find it cheap (there's a decent SP game)
Mafia (maybe)

...and San Andreas will be by May 2005.

KOTOR 2 came out today (12/06). However, you should play KOTOR 1 (you don't need to play it to understand KOTOR 2, though) before if you haven't played it- it's fantastic!

BF 1942 is my favorite game. I played it practically every day for the first year after it was released.
I still play once or twice a week.
The Road to Rome and Secret Weapons expansions are worth getting since you can find them pretty cheap. There don't seem to be a whole lot of servers running them though.
When you get BF 1942, you'll also want to download the Desert Combat mod. It's almost more popular than the original game. It's a total conversion of BF to modern day combat, mostly based on the first conflict in Iraq. T72's, M1A1's, Mig's, F-16's, M-16's, AK-47's, etc.

Keep in mind though, that the BF games are NOT great single player games. There is no story line, and no real missions. The single player game basically consists of having big battles with teams of bots. The BF series was really meant to be an online multiplayer game and does an outstanding job of that.

If you are into the WW2 shooters with great single player games, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty are both great games. For MOH, the Spearhead expansion is short, but enjoyable. The Breakthrough expansion seems a little longer and is also a lot of fun. For CoD, the United Offensive mod is a blast. It seemed just as long as the original to me.

I also really enjoyed No One Lives Forever 2.

I just picked up Max Payne 2 for 4 dollars on clearance at Target, but I haven't played it yet.

Just finished playing SW:KOTOR 1 and it was fun. It's a bit easier than hardcore RPGs like Baldur's Gate II but well done and has nice visuals.

Dungeon Siege was also a lot of fun and also easy to get into for a RPG. It's down to $10 if you get the jewel case version instead of the box bundled with its expansion pack.

What other titles should I be looking at?

What gfx card you got in those systems?

Far Cry is a beutiful game, but I'd wanna a good gfx card to really enjoy it.

Other games I enjoyed:

Dues Ex (the original)
System Shock 2
Star Wars KoTOR (knights of the Old Republic)
Star Wars: Jedi Outcast 2?? It's one where you're Kyle Kataryn (sp?) and you build and fight with your own light saber.

I advise playing the older ones (Dues Ex and System Shock 2) first. That way the old games won't look so graphically dated. Very compelling and immersive story lines in DE and SS2. You won't notice the gfx anyway. Also, some of these games, like SS2, have high res texture packs and stuf to update the gfx.

Czar, what is Eve online like?

eve online is kinda of a game where you either hate it or love it :)
of all the online games none of them come close to the community that is in eve, whole allinaces of 3000+ people, well only one alliance is 3000+ people, most of the other ones ar 2000+

The developers are realy dedicated and allow the community to shape the game and the story. Originaly the devs didnt even expect alliances to sprout everywhere out side of empire space but since that happened they have created a whole alliance system to help the players manage.
