GameSpot.com has pics, reviews, and site member reviews -- might be useful for games like KOTOR wihtout a demo.

Well FC should look really sweet with that 6800GT. Make sure to set "Environment" to Ultra (or whatever the highest is) in video settings. With "Ultra" on, you get the fish in the water and the birds/parrots in the sky etc.

, Far Cry is one of my favorite games, up there with the alltime greats like Starcraft. Favorite FPS for sure, and the best looking game I've played (I've played Doom3 and HL2).

Might want to consider the Sims 2 for the g/f, apparently females almost unanimously love it.... but if the 9600 is for her (I'm assuming it is), don't expect to play in > 640x480. That game makes Far Cry look like it would run on a 486, and Far Cry is a hardware-intensive game... The 9600 should push FC in 10x7 though, maybe 8x6 if you want full eye candy and maybe a bit of aa/af.

You could try WoW, a lot of couples play mmogs together. I'll be buying it soon myself, just wanted to give them some time to iron out any last-minute bugs & make last-minute tweaks. There's nothing quite like the mmo experience if you like that kind of thing.

If you enjoy Multiplayer...

UT2k4.
Also HL2 for the fun HL2 Deathmatch & CS:Source if you like the more slow paced FPS games.

There are so many games you could try. I don't think anyone mentioned the Serious Sam (try the demos first, of course) series for pure fast and fun action. No One Lives Forever series for over the top humor along with the enjoyable gameplay. I know I'll probably be playing Call of Duty with mynew machine as soon as it arrives. Can't miss out on some of the most moving SP FPS levels.

Most people have just talked about FPS games, but as some have mentioned there are quite a few excellent strategy and rpg type games. RTS gaming is my second love. (i'm a fan of NS) Rise of Nations is good for historical impression with RTS gameplay with depth, however your choices become numerous for fast-action RTS games like WarcraftIII, Rise of Nations, etc. Too many to name.

Maybe check out some "game of the year" lists?

I did the same exact thing you are doing. I had a crappy computer for years that couldn't play much of anything. Got a new one, and planned on playing like the past 3 years of good games. It doesn't happen. You get too overwhelmed and you end up playing a small handful. Don't get too ahead of yourself. Just a friendly warning before you buy 47 games. And if you didn't plan on buying - die you stupid ass pirate.

I played all the way through Serious Sam (with cheats) and I enjoyed it.
Lots of mayhem and destruction with hordes of bad guys coming at you from every direction! :)

Hehe, well I played all the way through in 4-player coop LAN (no cheats) for the first time. I was the first one to see the end guy... I basically said "omg, turn around guys!" ... they did and three more "omg"s followed.

the ONLY reason i didn't mention Serious Sam series is because they are "dated" (heck i'd also throw in RtCW, AvPII and maybe American McGee's Alice or Unreal II. . . . DEFINITEY throw in NOLF II) . . . .

HOWEVER, don't miss the new games playing through the old - gfx inferior games! And, unless i am mistaken the 3rd installment of Serious Sam should be out this Spring. :)

Excellent. IIRC they were previously aiming at Q4 '04, but couldn't make it. In its absense I've been abusing Painkiller, but still can't wait for Serious Sam 2.

I really enjoyed Painkiller, so I ordered the Painkiller: Battle Out of Hell expansion (on sale today at GoGamer.com for $12.90).

I also enjoyed the following:
Doom 3
Far Cry
Max Payne 2
Call of Duty (and CoD: United Offensive)
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (and MoH Breakthrough and MoH Spearhead)
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force I and II
NOLF 1 and 2
Splinter Cell (and SC: Pandora Tomorrow)
SW:KOTOR
Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast and JK: Jedi Academy
XIII
Age of Mythology (and AoM: the Titans)

Thanks for the warning! Not really into that type of game though.

I'll admit it, I'm into single player games with lots of cheat codes!!

That's what I'm talking about;). I wouldn't play any other way. FYI, I suck online (even against ten year olds):(

heh, sounds kinda like me, I was missing out due to bad hardware.

I think you should backtrack and get warcraft 3. Also, don't waste your money on the sh*t that we all know as doom3. Buy Far Cry. It's cheaper and kicks a LOT of ass. It's an awesome game.

Don't buy Doom3 unless you really liked single player on the other IDsoftware games. It's dull and useless.

If you like tactical strategy games, then give Silent Storm a try - it's the most underrated underdog that came out in '03 . . ..

I started playing Far Cry and I have to say this game is awesome.
I'm running at 1600 x 1200 with everything cranked and it looks and runs great.
No hesitation whatsoever even during hectic battles.

The only thing so far that I dislike about the game are the indestructable Helicopters.
That is just stupid.
