I've been noticing that waiters round up my written tips. Check your statement?

I tip standard, 18%~. I'm not here to talk about yet another tipping discussion, just this technically fraudulent practice I've across by waiters.

I ate in Monterey, CA about 4 months ago. I gave a nice 18% tip. Now, I like round numbers on my statement, so I did the following:

$33.87 check + $6.13 tip = $40

When I checked my statement, the waiter put in $40.87: netting HIM an even $7.00 tip. WTF? Now I don't care for the extra 87 cents, but the fact that he overwrote my amount bothered me. Well I moved on.

Just this month, I ate in NYC. Lo and behold, same thing happened. This kid rounded up 65 cents so he can have a whole amount.

Do these guys know, when you work tables, it doesn't mean shit whether you made even tips or not? At the end of the night, you'll still end up with random change and what you did made little difference for something that's quite offensive.

wtf mate?

I check my charges and notice this kind of thing a handful of times a year. For example, I'll leave a $5 tip and get charged $10.

The worst that I can think of is when I spent $5 at little place and left a $1 tip. They turned that $1 tip into a $15 tip.

Theft.

(And I tip really well.)

Managers will spot obviously altered receipts. They don't want the call from the pissed off customer, and they don't work for tips. Just make sure you write our everything so it's not easy to alter with ought being obvious. (Write the zeros nice and big with the null slash through them, do a horizontal slash through your seven, and the flag/tail on the ones. And so on.)

I also make sure I write tightly-spaced dollar signs on the tip and total (don't skip the total!). I even put a double line through the dollar-sign S so it's harder to alter or make it appear that I just went over an extra 1. Never followed up, but sounds like I should.

Theft. I would call the restaurant and tell the manager they need to fire that waiter for theft. And I would call the credit card company and have them charge back the entire tip.

I'm glad I don't live in the states I'd have a hard time with this tipping entitlement thing happening down there. Honestly, I didn't believe at first that your food servers and bartenders etc just work for tips.

In Canada they get paid at least minimum wage, tips are just a bonus. I would have gave $2 on a $35 meal.

I really, really want to cuss the OP out for being cheap.

But this really is bullshit, on principle alone. The amount doesn't matter, those people are stealing. Its sad that people have such low morals that they would steal a few cents like that.

SHut up shorty dickens

You're just mad because you work at McDonalds and don't get any tips at all. But what do you expect when you wash dishes?

I appreciate the effort but McDonalds doesn't have dishes no?

Made me lol because of that.

It's the principal. Call the manager. In sure the receipt shows the name of the server.

Tip those who said dispute it... don't. It's too low of a amount they just write it off so the restaurant won't even know that way. Does no good besides that you get a few cents back.

When the tip is expected or applied FOR me is when I don't tip AT ALL.

Mind you I usually tip 20-30%

I check my cc statements diligently, if someone charged me over 1 cent more than what my copy of the receipt said, I'd be on the phone with my cc company.

Is the OP stating that they are changing the sum of the amount that you signed for bwteen the time you signed and the charge was rung through?

I also adjust my tipping so the bill comes out to a round number; being on the road, we have to eat out a lot.
I have not noticed this; maybe I do not eat at fancy places then or I get better service.

Bills payed electronically are rounded up.
Fuel charges go to the next dollar.

The only thing I do not control the pennies on are direct purchases at a store or takeout.

OP, when I go out I do the same thing with my tips. If I ever found out that someone had altered the bill (overwrote the amount) I would immediately be on the phone with the CC company. I wouldn't bother complaining to the restaurant. As soon as they find that a chargeback had ocurred because an employee had altered a signed CC slip they would take care of it.

Keep your receipts ...

had a server at Ruby tuesdays do something like this. we called management who went above and beyond what was needed.

Yes i would be calling even over $.50 (or less) and if the management does nothing i would dispute the full charge. it's not about the $.50 its about them stealing from you.

Where did you get the idea that waiters and bartenders only work for tips here?
They are required to be paid minimum wage here. Tips are part of that calculation, but they are always paid at least minimum wage.

Ya that is BS if it is happening. I literally enter 100's of credit tips in at the end of the night at the club i work with. I have never entered in anything other then what they leave.

Once i had a lady call in and say i signed her CC and left myself a tip. Of course mangement takes this serious like they should, after reviewing all the video until they found the time/person it was done by... It was her friend that came up closed out here tab, left a tip probably was around 20%ish and carried her passed out friend out the door. They actually came in with a manager when they first reported it, pointed me out and said i was the one that did it. Of course when it was all said and done, there was no apology by them, just stomped out and left.
