I've been noticing that waiters round up my written tips. Check your statement?

And it isn't the amount that matters either, especially considering that they are probably doing this hundreds of times.

    Evolved into a tipping thread....

You are part of the problem. Tips are 15%. You are already starting out 5% higher and sometimes double the norm. Stop screwing up standard tipping for everyone else.

Well then, you aren't making $2.62 an hour. Your wages are $2.62 an hour, but you are making $45.00 an hour.

A wage is remuneration paid by an employer to an employee.

It's not borderline fraud. To say it's borderline means that it could/could not be fraud.

Not the case here. This is clearly fraud.

It is fraud but on tiny scale. Still fraud.

Fraudulent reporting of credit card receipts.
    Stealing money from the customer.

    So fraud and theft.

Or if you strongly feel that what they did amounts to theft and that they stole from you, call the police.

But, he is not paid minimum wage by his employer. In Canada, and the rest of the world, he would be paid minimum wage (or higher, probably) by his employer and not depend on tips.

i know its complicated..if you are a idiot.

    Standard tipping?

I can tip what I want, and what I feel like my waiter/waitress deserves.

Don't say everyone has to do "15%", it is personal choice.

Learn2read, i was replying to his comment that employers don't pay under min wage. I know what i make, i am not complaining. Just stating the fact that i do not get min wage, my checks are zero, and i pay in around $800-$1000 at least each tax season.

What I don't understand is how management didn't catch it.

Every restaurant I ever worked at, the closing manager would input every credit card receipt into Excel, or manually calculate it.

They would add up every bill total, tip total, and combined total written on each receipt. If they didn't add up to what was input into the computer by the server, then they would have to manually find the receipt. Tedious, yeah, but it prevented stuff like this.

Most of the time they would just find out that half of their customers can't add correctly.

Well, it would be ignorant to work for $3 an hour under the US federal minimum wage law...

If you are that ignorant as to accept $3 an hour instead of the required wage, then you are probably beyond help...

    :p

Most places the employees enter the tips, the manager just runs a report for totals at the end of shift and never looks at anything more then that.

People who tout the "law" about an employer paying minimum wage probably haven't ever actually worked in the restaurant business. While it is technically required, it is extremely extremely rare for an employer to actually do this. And many or most wait staff are not even aware that this is the law. I would be surprised if it happened with any regularity in a vast majority of restaurants.

Restaurants I've been in, all waiters/tip employees knew the law. Furthermore, its required they post a minimum wage poster explaining the law, the fact employees dont read it is their own issue.

Yes, they do. When I worked at McDonald's as a teen, I did the dishes on numerous occasions.

I noticed that recently as well. I always round my total to an even dollar amount. The waitress rounded her tip to a whole dollar amount, because the charge was twenty cents too high.
