I've been noticing that waiters round up my written tips. Check your statement?

tips are exclusively in cash here, I don't think you can tip using your credit card. They sure don't give you a piece of paper to write it on it. There is usually no service charge but a fixed cover price, the service charge is a rip-off some restaurants try to pull off.
I don't think any meal under 50$ warrants a tip, above that only a few € if the server is really good.

This is the taste of freedom, getting something from your money.

Rounding up sounds like fraud to me.

Wait, can't you see the total amount on the card payment device? Or can they change it after the fact?

It's done during reconcile. We had a problem with this type of behavior when servers were allowed to reconcile themselves. Now, only the store managers (GM/AM) do the reconcile.

Also, cards aren't (usually) charged immediately, the POS system holds the card info in memory, and the cards are charged at the end of the night when the reports (payroll/labor, sales, and cc) are run.

Are your servers making 1/3 of the minimum wage like American servers?

That's really messed up. You should definitely complain.

yep.

I always write the dollar sign immediately before the dollar value for tip, and after cents, a straight line across that blank space, then do the same, clearly, for total amount.

I do this all the time--even with takeout receipts when leaving no tip, I clearly mark all of this on the receipt.

....of course, I rarely follow through with checking my statements and comparing with receipts. The assumption being that if I display a greater sense of detail and concern with such notation, the establishment should expect that I will be well aware of any shenanigans that they try to pull after the fact.
