Just gauge your exercises by how long you can run for. If you still get tired walking up a flight of stairs, you arn't making progress.

Patience. It takes a while to get the weight off, plus your weight can vary quite a bit from day to day. Mine yoyos by about 3lbs on any given day.

Stop looking at the scale, and start measuring yourself.

When starting an exercise program, the fisrt thing your body does is grow muscle.

Getting a body fat scale wouldn't be a bad idea either. They're not all that accurate in an absolute sense, but are quite accurate as far as tracking overall fat loss. There several models by Tanita that are well under $100.

If you were maintaining a certain weight before you started exercising, and eating better, than you will lose weight by doing so. How much time that takes is up to you. So don't let the weight gain discourage you. Give it a few more weeks and you should see some good results depending on your weight and age. I would try drinking more water and not eating after 6 PM.

hmm not eating after 6 is pretty hard to do. I get off work at 5, then usually I exercis from 6-7, then I eat..

is it better to exercise (do cardio and stuff) in the morning or at night??

Is it all about the number for you? Or would keeping mind that you feel and look better be a welcome consolation?

Whenever you have time to exercise is a good time, from what I have heard. As long as you do it.
And the 6pm rule is just to keep you from eating late at night. Your metabolism really slows down at night.

Start measuring your body fat percent instead of overall weight. Your body fat is probably going down as your muscle mass is going up. body fat % is a more accurate way to measure your progress.

I don't agree with the not eat after 6 thing, because doing that you're going hours and hours without any protein. It is a good idea to slow down consumption of calories though, since the metabolism does slow down at night, as mentioned! You're not losing weight now because you may be getting some muscle and replacing it with fat, but muscle doesn't come all that quickly, so if this is the effect, then you're not losing fat particularly fast.

If you want to lose fat it's really not difficult. Keep doing a lot of excercise and cut back your calories significantly, since they're amlost always to blame for stagnant/not happening weight loss. Split your meals over 5-6 day, preferably based around a protein source. You want your first protein meal as early as possible in the day, and the last as late as possible, to tide over muscle growth while you sleep. Count your calories so that you know how many you're taking in. Most people don't have the first clue and would be surprised at the number. I don't know your bodyweight but a good starting point is 1800-2000 calories, depending upon activity levels.

Target has one for $25. Works pretty darm well too. It was within 2% of what the high tech one at the gym said.

I have an $80 tamita one and it gave the same reading as what my gym one did, which was a supposedly $2000 scale. Both were tamita, so I guess the cheap one used the same overall measuring devices/logic.

Still, best is either a pressure tank or water tank, but that's pricey and a hassel :) Taking pictures every week isn't a bad idea.

The kicker is I actually GAINED weight! WTF!!?!? I want to lose weight goddamit

am I doing something wrong? I gained like 2-4 pounds after I start exercising

LOL :D

golf is actually a sport if you carry ur own bag and walk 18 holes.

Its like walking about 4 miles

alright, lets say it`s 4miles/18=0.22 miles between each hole. You are done before you heart rate goes up. That's not exercising. Sure, you'll burn a couple calories but nothing significant.

Fiber - or anything that acts like fiber. You can fill your belly with foods that will be quickly absorbed. Or you can fill up your belly with foods that will come right out the next day. Both will satisfy one of the hunger satifying criteria (there are a handful of ways to feel full, a full stomach is one of them).

And for the golf discussion: you burn nearly the exact same amount of calories by walking 4 miles as you do running 4 miles. Running will be better if you want to bulk up your leg muscles and sweat more, but there isn't much other difference.

I like your idea

For some reason no body fat scale has every worked for me. They're always over 10 points away from what the calipers and water tank tell me. One of the guys at the local nutrition store (not GNC by god :p) was telling me that when you get to lower bf%'s the scales sometimes start acting a little screwy. I mean, when I was down at ~6.5% BF the scale was showing either 20% or ERROR. This was two different Target scales heh.

You can google it just as well as I can. Just make it a gradual change (to avoid excess gas and possibly diarrhea).

Slap 25 pounds of stuff on your back and walk 18 holes of hills and valleys in 110 heat. I guarantee you are burning calories. Sure it isn't the same as running 4 miles, but it's certainly better than sitting on your ass and doing nothing.
