It's summer and my CPU is burning up!

I got a p4 3.0e (yeah, prescott I know), and it's idling between 48 to 52C, and at load it's nearly 60-62C.

I have a Zalman 7700AlCu installed on there, with some Arctic Silver Ceramique that I installed a few months ago (Both the HSF and the paste ).

In the winter, sure, it idled at 42-45 and loaded at 60's.

Strange part is, I popped open the side of the case, put my room fan (BIG fan) right next to the side as an intake.... and what the hell? My CPU st arted idling at 60C, but as soon as I put the side back on and closed it, my CPU started idling in the high 40's.

Any tips on what to do?

Are you sure??
Because having my computer on means my room gets VERY hot, and as my room gets hotter the AC gets worked up more and more and I waste a crapload of current, but the room gets even hotter and hotter, and eventually my cpu'll get to around 60C idling (this happened last summer)

Heh. No thanks ;P. I paid $1400 for this setup (With a 9800Pro) back in ... last June I beleive. Strangely enough, I'm getting worse temperatures with my Zalman 7700AlCu than with my stock cooling last summer.... last summer I remember it idled around 45C and load at 60C (Stock). Now with my Zalman I'm idling at 50's and loading at 60's. Meh!

Get two of those and SLI them...It'll solve all of your problems. Wait, what? Oh sorry, generic AT response.

I'll sell you my 3.2c - Lately (when it's hot) It's idling at 30-32C and I'm using the same HSF as you. ;)

Yep. Dusted it all off. I only have a side intake and a rear exhaust (Plus a PSU exhaust) - should I try making my side intake an exhaust?

build your rig into your window....you can have the worlds first ever window/case mod! and it can double as a window fan....

Give it a shot. Works for some, not for others.

I have my thermostat set to 75F, so that would explain why mine stays cooler

edit - I usually keep it lower on warmer days as well when I'm going in and out of my apartment

Same thing happened to my 6600gt. It usually Idled around 41 degrees celsius, but now that it's summer, it idles around 50.

Don't worry about it, you're fine with temps.

I dropped it down to 1.2 ghz... god damn. Why the hell won't this thing stay cool though? It stays at 125F (~52C), and occasionally drops to 121F (49.5C).
Fine, I won't "care" about the temperatures now becuase it seems to be a problem with all the prescott owners.

My new question:
-What should I do to prevent my room from getting all warmed up? I'm usually on the computer a lot. I keep my doors open, and my windows open but yet my room stays warmer than any other room.

I suggest you put your cpu at stock speed this is not the culprit. Don't have more then 1 hd in your computer, this thing is hotter then even a cpu at 7200rpm. 7200 rpm usually quite hot, 5400 quite warm. Take out your video card and enable onboard video for cooler running operation but slower 3d performance.

Ignore what your mobo says about the temp, it is not reading it correctly. Turn off computer then touch the heatsink yourself, if its warm then it is not as hot as your mobo says. If it is hot then the mobo is correct about temp.

If you can afford LCD monitor over CRT, even better, it will at least cut power usage by half and temperature by half as well.

Where are you seeing the CPU temp report?
Is it an Asus MB?
