So did Apple really feel that threatened by the Pre that they had to release a new iPhone that is essentially just the old iPhone?

No, there are some revolutionary changes, like cut-and-paste support, the ability to shoot video, etc.
 
Iphones are actually very well made. Before it first came out, people had their hopes really high and were ready to critique Apple for the slightest flaw. The phone is not flawless but is superbly made and while it doesn't have all the features in the world, its technology was way ahead of other manufacturers.
 
My apple fan cousin said they are junk and would never get another one. THen a buddy of mine was visiting from Texas and couldn't get a cell signal all weekend. Plus the looks of what it was doing just sitting on the table (lighting up with Apple logo, then dark, then lighting up, then showing the time, repeat) that would annoy the fuck out of me.

I think the Iphones are good.....I don't own one. But I cannot STAND the people who own them. Every person I know that has one can't wait to show me some new app they downloaded, or talk about their Iphone. They will take any and every opportunity to whip that phone out and show you something....pictures...games...text. I (and 99% of society) does not give a crap that you just downloaded an app that turns your phone into a flashlight.

From what my cousin said, the first one had a bad display, his second had rows of dead pixels, and his third the faceplate came off.

My friend's iPhone that I was talking about was just sitting on the table. It would show a white apple logo, then go dark. A few seconds later it would come on again and go dark. Then every once in a while it would show the clock, then go dark. It sat there doing this the entire time I was visiting with him and he wasn't touching it, or receiving calls (no signal).

Sounds like he got pretty unlucky... I don't know anyone that has had ANY issue with their iPhone (I know maybe 10-15 people who own them).

Not sure what the Apple logo thing was about. Never seen that.

They added a new feature on the new one as well. Randomly it will speak reinforcing words like - "You really are cool!" and "You are a special person, I like you" or "Everybody wants to be just like you."
