I know the difference. You fail to understand that some opinions are better than others. My 5 year old nephew's opinions are pretty dumb. So are yours, apparently.

Your 5 year old nephew is only a year or three from surpassing you, as evidenced by your post.

Oh God, cliche city:

- Let's run and jump off a cliff at the last second! Bonus points of there's an explosion behind them that they just barely outran.

- Orange contrasts with blue. We get it.

- The crowd looks on in terror as everything they knew is destroyed! Shocking!

- Explosions! Throw them in! There's never enough!

I said this on the last film and it looks like this one is going to be no different: This is NOT Star Trek. It's looks like yet another action movie that happens to have Star Trek-like characters in it.

Star Trek stories are supposed to focus on social issues, using human ingenuity to solve problems, and show how we've evolved. There was too much pew-pew-boom and not enough script in the last movie, and it looks like this if following suit.[/QUOTE They should have made the movie about global warming with a little bit of inequality in the workforce between man and women peppered in.

Things evolve and keep up with the demands of the next generation, I loved all Kirk based movies and I loved 2009 Star Trek. They are all awesome... I am not stuck in the past.

Also, I'm curious as to why all computer consoles in the future seem to be powered by explosives?

It would make me want to wear full armor anytime I went near one of the damn things. Can you imagine pressing a button on your TV and it takes out the whole wall?

Are you saying that the TNG movies were good? If you are, then you have terrible taste. The star wars reviewer did a number on the tng movies.

http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/

He makes the point that you whiners are missing. The TNG movies were already "not star trek" and just dumb action movies. JJ Abrams wasn't the one to make the change. The only difference between the shit TNG movies and good remake is that the remake is actually a good action movie.

If you want to blame someone for star trek movies ceasing to be 'star trek,' blame rick berman not abrams you fucking idiots.
Yeah. Fuck you, Rick Berman!

Though I kinda liked First Contact, it really wasn't Star Trek. :\

Yeah, Star Trek VI was really the last true Trek movie for me. After that, it turned into "how many phasers can we squeeze into a movie?"

Your TV would probably go sparkly, too, if it were hit by Romulan photon torpedoes

I had high hopes for the TNG movies, but, FC aside, they were pretty much all shit. D:

Thats because TNG was not an action oriented tv show like TOS. It just doesn't translate as well into summer action blockbuster as TOS

Wow, was that someone's special effects demo reel or a Star Trek movie?

It seems like they are targeting the lowest common denominator with this one. Star Trek always had an audience that enjoyed an engaging plot while special effects were merely a backdrop. Now it has been twisted into a movie that looks like Transformers. As a standalone movie it could pass but it doesn't look like it fits in the Star Trek universe.

Very true, but there was something else that was wrong with them. The plots sucked and the characters were, well, out of character.

The TOS films were an inconsistent lot, but four out of the six were actually pretty good, and the characters were still the same people we knew in the series, if a bit older.

Do you like sci-fi action stuff? what are your favorite sci-fi movies?

I like intelligently done scifi like most of us here:

Gattaca
Children of Men
Moon
Alien/s
Matrix
etc

But I never got into.. what I think as 'silly' scifi fantasy stuff like.. Star Trek or Star Wards.

Shatner was an action hero while Jean Luc could chair a really mean meeting.

Your list started with 2 of my favorite movies of all time.

I didn't really love the first Star Trek in this mold. Check it out and see if you like that one, you will like this one. I thought it was OK, but as a Star Trek fan the story was ridiculous and action was over the top. It was very clear to me they were making it into Transformers rather then making it a smart movie in the vein of the original Trek movies.

yeah...

those first 3 are really, the only Sci Fi movies to be made since, well....Blade Runner. I can give some props to the Matrix, and only the first movie, but it is far too distracted with action and all that.

like I mentioned earlier, this looks like Mass Effect, the movie.

I'm not a Star Trek person. in general, I hate most things about it. I liken TNG to space boardroom meetings. no thanks.

But I like the focus of the Original Series--they very much were real sci fi, and they were quite poignant for their time. I think the same can be said for much of TNG, but still, way too much conference tables.

Well, I'm not sure about that. The problem with TOS was there were too many main characters that didn't have strong relationships. In TOS, everything centered around Kirk, McCoy, and Spock, and what good friends they were. Kirk and McCoy were unlikely companions, and Kirk was the common bond that kept them together.

With TNG, Picard was the strong lead, but he was a bit of a loaner. He bonded with Data quite a bit, but it never seemed to mesh well. Riker and Troi's relationship was always clumsy and boring. Picard and Crusher was never explored. LaForge and Data were used mostly as comedy relief (oh, look what that crazy Geordi did to Data this time!). Worf was always played as a 3rd wheel, never doing anything important. Characters were all over the place and never "together".

The TNG movies definitely showed lack of character development and story telling. It would have been interesting if a strong director like Nicholas Meyer was able to take the helm. The potential was there, just never realized.

Problem with first Abrams Star Trek movie was, that it's premise was shallow a bad guy must be stopped, that's it. And even such a primitive plot had many plotholes and absurd moments, just to add some more action, to already overly action movie. Kind of a cheap flick. Main problem is, that Star Trek was very specific as a sci-fi brand, it has slower pace, more dialogues and diplomacy and many mysterious elements, stories were only occasionally centered around a bad guy (usually it was a whole ship of klingons or borgs instead of a one person) and even the defeat of an enemy was usually not about power or agility, but about a clever and sophisticated way to persuade them or use their own philosophy against them etc...

For awhile, I was rather disappointed in the latest Star Trek movie. When I first saw it, it was really hard to ignore the fact that Nero's presentation just simply doesn't make him out to be a very good villain. Showing someone destroying a planet doesn't make you a great villain.

However, I eventually realized that Nero really isn't so much of a villain as he is a plot device. The point of him is to further the character development between the (eventual) crew of The Enterprise. This is actually a lot like Raimi's Spider-Man 2 where Doc Ock may have been in the movie and is considered the villain, but he was definitely not like your typical villain. The "enemy" in that movie was Peter himself, and the "enemy" in Star Trek is more or less Kirk and Spock. The movie is really about the both of them accepting each other and their "destiny."

To sum it up, the movie was more of a character exposé.

Early trailers, especially when they borrow music from other films/shows, are always funny.

Thoughts while watching:
Terminator music

A lot of awesome trailer music is done by the Two Steps from Hell guys. In fact, I'm pretty certain some of their music was used in the Terminator Salvation trailer, and I know the first Star Trek (reboot) movie used Two Steps from Hell (Freedom Fighters). Hell, even Mass Effect (mentioned earlier in this thread) has used the group's music before.

You can see a bunch of the uses here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invincible_(Two_Steps_from_Hell_album)#Use_in_media

It's rather interesting... to me at least. :p

Think of it this way, where do you dissipate all the energy that comes with those weapons? It's not like the ship can ground to anything in space. I wonder if this is even a problem on the space shuttle. How do you dissipate that energy? This should also be a horrible problem on places like the moon I'd think.

I bought the first movie, and I almost never buy movies, so it was a favorite. Looking forward to this one :)
