This is ridiculous. My spouse left for work a bit ago and the thermometer in the car said it was 6 degrees F at our house. Tomorrow it's supposed to snow and be just around freezing for awhile (going to get slushy), then it's supposed to freeze hard again.

We've got a blizzard warning here in Fargo, ND.

grand forks here

people in this thread are wimps.

Wimps? I don't recall seeing anyone bitching about it.

I have practiced and am proficient in snow driving. "Not that I'd have to be at this range, but I'm a fuckin surgeon with this thing." Great quote. I can get my car to do whatever I want on snow and almost anything on ice. I am the great equilizer! rawr!!

Supposed to do the same thing again Saturday, too.

We even have a bit of snow on the mountain tops as far southwest as the Bay Area. We had heavy hail near Santa Cruz last night, but no snow. Got as low as 34 degrees, which is damn cold for being next to the ocean. Plenty of snow in the Sierra Mountains, of course.

Keep it coming. We need the water, and I love it when it is cold out.

Is everyone ready for Round 2? Snow, freezing rain, rain that freezes against the cold ground, and then snow again.:Q

pssst... rain that freezes when it hits the ground is freezing rain ;) lol

I'm jealous. Portland doesn't get this type of weather often, I wish I was there to watch the chaos.

Technically, freezing rain is rain that freezes because the air at ground level is cold enough to cause it to freeze, but it didn't have time to freeze on the way down. This is opposed to rain that freezes because the ground itself is frozen (and absorbs the latent heat from the rain) while the air at ground level is above freezing. The former is more spectacular than the later since freezing rain sticks to everything while ground-induced freezing will only stick to the ground (and even then not all surfaces).

It looks like it has begun..

Temp is already up to 32.5º... Sounds like it's going to be a real mess..

Is it freezing raining, or still snow?

Is everyone dead or what? lol

It's been above freezing pretty much all day there, along with precipitation.. How is it falling? As freezing rain? Rain? Snow?

Wet snow falling, not sticking at low elevations, with bare pavement on main roads and highways. Some sticking above 300 or so feet but it's wet and sticky, easy to drive on.

People who leave their chains on and drive on bare pavement at 15 mph can DIAF :|

edit: The weather service got it right. The news channels spreading dire warnings last night were obviously pimping the grocery stores and Les Schwab with their FUD. Oh well, at least all the idiots stayed home. I was stuck in traffic 2 hours last night. I swear, I grew up in this town, and the way people drive here in the snow is a freakin' disgrace.

The roads are more or less bare down where I am south of Portland. It looks like we warmed up before the precipitation started, so we skipped the snow and resulting freezing rain on top of said snow. Everyone seems particularly unsure of the forecast, both of when exactly we'll refreeze, whether we'll get more snow right after that, and of course what will happen this weekend.

If there is going to be any more excitement, then tomorrow morning will be it. Still, it will probably be the usual wet and sticky Cascade crud we usually get here (unlike the icy tundra snow we got on Sunday), and which I actually think is a blast to drive in. Otherwise, I think this is about over except for the occasional inconsequential flurry.

A friend is on the phone from Vegas and telling us about it, LOL!
She says it has been 7 years since they've had this much snow.

Over 12 inches of snow (powder) here, still snowing. No idea what the temperature is, but it's cold enough to freeze the buckets of water we took out for the dogs and chickens.

It hasn't hit about freezing here in about a week or so. We just got hammered, well not hammered, but dumped quite a bit of snow today and more coming tonight. On top of that, high winds are expected with gusts up to 60mph then the temperatures drop again tomorrow only reaching a high about 20F. Brrr...

A number of years ago we got a total of 6 meters/20 feet of snow. School had to be extended because there was a few weeks worth of school closers. My neighbors snow bank for his drive way was higher then his one story house. I had to be careful not to hit the power lines when shoving down the top of my snow bank from the drive way so I wouldn't kill myself (like my neighbor) trying to "throw" the snow on top of it. People where walking on the side walks using snow shoes because it was snow covered, and ~15 feet high.

Then there is this. (yes, that is a highway)

That's a snow blower on the front of that front end loader.

Portland here and it's pretty messy.

Woo hoo more Youtube videos of idiots trying to go up iced over hills! :)

Portland when it snows is like Los Angeles when it rains.

Only it's possible to drive on rain while impossible to drive on ice. Oregon never gets "just snow" because it's always wet before the temp drops so that it CAN snow. We always get snow on top of ice and it makes driving a bitch.

I have driven on ice before, quite often actually. Not perfect smooth black ice (on purpose), but you can drive on ice & snow if you take your time.

Further north in Canada they make use of frozen lakes as roads in winter, though this is most often for delivering supplies to oil, mining and logging operations.

"Spokane International Airport had 18 inches of snow at 10 a.m., easily eclipsing the 24-hour snowfall record of 13 inches on Jan. 6 and 7, 1950."
