NVIDIA to Phase Out 7800GTX 512MB in February

Written by Varun Dubey

(Insider Report) - Well, we?ve been hearing rumors about this for a while, but we finally heard it from the horse?s mouth not too long ago. Recent conversations with insiders at NVIDIA have led us to believe that their top of the line card, the 7800GTX 512MB will be out of production sometime in Q1 next year, most likely somewhere around February ?06.

This fits in quite well as we suspect ATI to launch the R580 GPU around the same timeframe. Therefore, NVIDIA will need to come up with something really special to beat ATI?s upcoming offering (at least on paper). Of course, if the 7800GTX 512MB is anything to go by, the G71 or G72 GPUs will still be considerably faster.

However, tough times could be ahead for NVIDIA, since the maximum overclock that the 7800GTX 512MB managed was around 700MHz while the X1800XT crossed the 1GHz marker. Of course, this was with space age cooling but the potential was definitely there. Needless to say, both NVIDIA and ATI are prepping their next product lineups as 2005 draws to an end.

wonder if this is a repost.

The fact that you can't 7800GTX 512mb costs $750 vs. $530 for x1800xt, and that 2 x7800GTs outperform 512mb for less, shouldn't make it a worthwhile card in the first place. And for those who want top-of-the-line there is very little time before 90nm G70 part and R580 arrive. Plus, it's not like the card is available in the first place...so it is technically EOL.

It is interesting to say the least and wouldnt surprise me. I dont think Nvidia is interested in shipping the 512 at a price point under 550 bucks. If the next round of cards comes out soon and are even faster I dont think they will remain over 600 bucks for terrible long. This of course would push the 512MB down into the sub 600 market.

So it wouldnt surprise me if they simply replace it with the G71.

Tough times for nVidia? Last time I checked, ATi has been losing every benchmark, not nVidia. * shrug *

Losing every benchmark? The now near comparably priced X1800XT doesn't lose every benchmark to the 7800GTX 256. In fact, it is generally a faster card. What will be interesting is the price of the Crossfire X1800XT master card and setup versus the SLI setup of the 7800GT/GTX 256.

Yeah outside actually saying this is a limited run card, Nvidia said its a limited run card. Now I am sure they thought that they would be closer to demand with their supply for as it is, but they might not be dealing with shortages as much as they thought but more along the eyes of they thought their initial shipment would last a couple of weeks maybe a month at intial pricing and would allow them to stock of for second and third large shipments. Now they are shipping them as fast as they can (slow), and its becoming a PE edition.

You have a good point. However, the fact remains that the cards do exist and many people, even here at AT, own them.

This is similar to the X800XTPE debacle. That card was scarce, but people still owned them. And ATI claimed the performance title because of it. There were BATTLES beyond reason about this amoung ATI/Nvidia fans. The X800XTPE gradually became more and more available, unlike the 7800GTX512 which is "rumored" to be phased out.

So, to be very fair munky, Nvidia has the right to the crown, this round, if ATI had the right to the crown, last round. Only makes sense. IMHO.

ati only really took the crown with the 850. WHen i was x800xtpe v. 6800ultra is was pretty much a wash. Ati then came with a refresh with a few more mhz to take the title and then nvidia released SLI and ati was left scrambling.

Hmm. Well after owning both an X800XT PE and a 6800GT@Ultra speeds, I'd have to give the lead to the ATI card. At least for all the games I played. It wasn't a huge lead, but it was there.

Sure, Nv can claim the performance crown this round (so far). But that wont do much good to people who actually want to buy this thing.

Actually, I just ordered an eVGA 7800GTX 512mb from TigerDirect on friday. I'll be getting it tomorrow. Of course, they're sold out now.

Still deciding trying to decide if I should use it and then step-up to the G71 w/ eVGA Step-Up program(hopefully the G71 won't have the supply issues as the 512) or possibly sell it on eBay.

Hey, you could probably list the card for $900 and people would buy it (or so it seems...) This card could pay for your upgrade to the g71.

I know. When I went to eBay, there's a BFG 7800GTX 512 that's at almost $900 w/ a day left. I'm kicking myself for not ordering a second card, one to keep and one to sell. But if the G71 comes out sometime in February, I'll be able to use eVGA's step-up program and the $750(includes COD2) would carry over as credit.

SLI isn't really an option for me unless I pick-up a new psu, pci-e tv tuner card and possibly a new motherboard. I just want to see all of the eye candy when playing BF2. Scary, I know. :)

Agree with you 100% right here. I had the same set up though I ran my GT at 425/1150 which is faster than an Ultra and my XT at XT-PE speeds feels a bit faster in all the games I play. AKA I can actually play games such as BF2 + CSS at 1920x1200 and have them run well. This of course excludes Doom III which I never played after the first week.
