I think this is a fun idea! I'm not a good photographer, but I'd be up for participating! 😀

You could have a category for animals, landscapes, black and white pictures, and people. I'd suggest you have a seperate one for pets, so someone's favorite kitty isn't up against a picture of a beautiful tiger or something like that. 🙂

Why must the pictures be taken after it's announced? Many people have pictures that are great stored on their computer or on their camera. Why would these not be eligible?

Ok, screw people like me then. I shoot color reversal aka transparency film, and there is about a two week latency between when I finish a roll and when it comes back from the lab (I send off via USPS to A&I in Cali, I'm in Indiana). Then there's the issue of scanning; I usually send batches once or twice a year to another place halfway across the US to get them scanned (minimum of 16+ images in a batch), since I can't afford the Nikon Coolscan 5000 to digitize my trannies (or a DSLR of similar cost range to get them in digital form to begin with).

Oh well, this is targeted only at digital P&S people (and Lirion), so I'll just forget it. Nevermind.

Edited for spelling.

i take it your scarcasm meter is broken?

WHY DONT WE HAVE A STICKY YET!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! :|

you can use photos that are on your hard drive if you are one of the people that shoots slide film, but if you shoot digital going aout and shooting for the contest would be good if you can manage

great idea.

my suggestions for artistic categories:
-macro shots
-landscape shots

I also think the potential rule for for a shot that must be taken after the contest begins is stupid. Some poeple live where there is absolutely nothing to be photographed, and their only goods shots would be from their travels. It would favour some people much more than others. Plus, lets be honest, there is no way you could enforce this rule.

You only prove the point further, most people will favor a rich landscape, say a tropical beach, than an artistic view point of an everyday landscape. Your entire comment about enforcing the rules is pointless, of course they cant enforce the rules...who is going to stop some lame tard from finding an awsome pic on the net and claiming it as his own? No one really, but its on the honor system and it is just a fun little contest.

Thanks for clarifying... 🙂

Believe me, I use my camera regularly, and wish that I could put some of the stuff I'm making now in the contest, but it's just not possible (unless I had one of those Jobo automatic film processing systems and the aforementioned film scanner). 😉

Is there a theme?
How many photos are allowed per entry?
What about age range entry?
How about split the entry into 2 categories (non modification full frame print/slide category, and manipulation/modification category)?

darkroom work is so much fun.
If you have the time & space.

I just donated away all of my paper/chemical/darkroom equipment for colour & B/W last week.

Here's an idea... if we're going to do any category division not related to photo subject matter, what about sorting the entries by experience level of the photographer? I'm "only" 17, but have been involved in photography for almost 7 years. It wouldn't exactly make sense to have me in a lesser category than a 35 year old adult who never touched a camera until they got a P&S digicam 3 months ago, would it? Of course, it wouldn't be fair to have some of the photo gods (e.g. Lirion, et. al.) competing against me, either. 😉

However, since there are really only a couple (at least ones that I know of) of really good photographers (I'm not including myself in that group) - and not enough to justify an additional "freaking awesome" group above the normal three, we could just keep it simple and have a beginner/intermediate/advanced setup. Of course, this would depend on people being honest about their abilities. If somebody enters an image of John Shaw or Galen Rowell caliber in the beginner section... well, the people organizing this contest should have decided what to do about that beforehand. 🙂

And I'm not sure I understand your response to his third question either. 😉

I think he's suggesting a "pretty much straight from the camera" category and a photoshopped category. The full frame bit doesn't make any sense at all, because pretty near every photographer I know or know of (excluding Cartier-Bresson) crops their images. That's standard practice, whether you're in the film, digital, or hybrid darkroom.

Suggestion: How's about a rotating panel of judges? If you win, you get to be a judge for the next round. I really like the idea of the "virtual judge" mentioned earlier, based on the popular vote.

Thank you for clarifying for me.
Full frame is a print that maintains the 3:2 ratio aspect of film camera (absolutely no modification ? WYSIWYG).

I normally don?t crop when making prints from film, and I never crop when making Chibachrome prints.

I've noticed some people saying they want to use pictures which are already been taken

I've got some really nice pics that I'd like to submit. I love amature photography, mostly take picture of landscapes.

However, I've noticed that vshah said pictures must be taken AFTER.

Can we have two different categories or just not care when the pictures were taken?

Ok, thanks for clarifying. I didn't know that every good photographic composition in the world was designed to fit perfectly in a 3:2 aspect ratio image.

Just a quick question, though. What if I shot a 4/3rds camera? Oh wait, that's digital, guess I can't enter that in the "real photography" category, even if it is straight from the RAW file, with no levels or curves modification in Photoshop (which is a bit hypocritical, since controlling one's exposure of the print in the darkroom does pretty much the same thing, and heck, they can even dodge and burn!).

But yet, what about the 'blads? They have a square format (6x6) and the panoramic XPan 35mm camera. Then there's the 4x5 view camera, with its 4:5 aspect ratio. Do we need a separate category for these formats with "inferior" aspect ratios?

In case you were wondering, this post is pretty much entirely a cruel joke. I don't expect anyone to take me seriously, and I'm not trying to ridicule anyone's personal preferences in how they print and display their work. I just don't think it's right for them (the "The Grand Inquisition of Photographic Judges and Arbiters," as Michael Reichmann calls them) to try to impose their ultra-conservative funda... oops, this isn't the religion forum... on everyone. 😉

There is no way I'm placing my pictures on my own webserver, I would not be able to handle the bandwidth usage (this is ATOT after all). Could anyone recommend a HIGH bandwidth picture hosting site?
