hehehe..

Beta was superior to VHS. Better picture quality.

THe other comparison is too much personal preference to say one is better or worse.

I'm surprised at the profound lack of understanding and foresight I'm seeing in this supposedly advanced crowd. Several inventions and discoveries were relatively unimportant at first onset; Kamen's device will be good, intiially, just for use in commercial applications (mail carriers, etc). In the future, however, there is no telling what impacts it will have. Rather than judging it based on the invention itself, try to think of it on the principles it involves and has introduced for further use in applications.

All inventions are a stepping stone for further use and application. Kamen has never stated that this machine will replace cars; rather, he believes that it will help revolutionize the structure of our cities. For those of you who aren't entirely American-centric, I think you understand what he means - ranging from the fußßgangerzone's in German cities to the structure of other cities, the impact that IT will have is, as of yet, indeterminable; I expect it, though, to be rather high. If Kamen were offering public stock, I'd be buying. From the merit of his past inventions alone, I can have faith, regardless of whether IT can be riced up. 🙂

Another poster from a different board offers this take:

<< Forget the damn Scooter - You're all missing the Point!

Those of you (75% +) who were looking for Kamen to defy the laws of nature by either A) creating an anti-gravity machine, B) creating a perpetual motion machine, or C) some combination of the two, were begging for disappointment. And those like Oil Company Engineer who are taking delight in the fact that the impossible didn't happen are equally misguided. Ignore his stupid postings.

Nevertheless, what Kamen has invented is truly remarkable. Just look at what we know. It has:

1) No engine
2) No brakes
3) No gearshift, throttle, etc.
4) Runs on $.05 cents/day of electricity
5. Lined up corporate customers including the Post Office, FedEx and others. Translation: It's not just a @#$@^* Scooter, people!!!

The first 4 features are truly remarkable. Whether or not Kamen makes billions is beside the point. These technological advancements will be central to transportation from this point forward.

Secondly, there is no way the Post Office or FedEx can use the vehicle as pictured in Time or the NY Times to carry hundreds or thousands of parcels of mail! Just think about it, folks. There are obviously other versions, not pictured yet, for corporate uses.

Just chill out, people. Forget all the stupid expectations that were created and judge this invention on its own merits. What I've seen so far is truly remarkable, and the next 10-20 years of advancements on this introduction will be even more so.

And my favorite response:

<< I love the attitude of all these cynical bastards. They were the one's sitting on the hill across from Kitty Hawk saying "bah, that thing will never fly" >>

Yes as Ive said, we have only seen the consumer version. The "industrial" one hasnt been shown, maybe in the morning but I doubt it.

I wonder how long it will before kids get them and soup them up to do triple digit speeds and race through malls, etc. :Q

Cheers!

According to cnet this thing is supposed to navigate stairs, and be impossible to tip over? lol, this I gotta see. I think a certain site needs to learn the laws of physics.

Have you seen the IBOT?

Rob

<< I've seen sketches of ibot, but isn't this thing a whole different beast. >>

Yes, it is; the IBOT, however, contrary to your belief in your previous post, navigates stairs and is impossible to tip over. I was answering your question with a bit of rhetoric.

what entity said, that's the IBOT, and is incredible. a wheel chair that can get on one wheel and balance, even when the weight is shifted? can climb stairs? the guy is remarkable. read up on what he has created. the first portable insulin device. the IV pump thingy in hospitals, lots of stuff. i really hope they have a demonstration on tv tomorrow, not just talking about it. that may change a lot of people's minds.

IBOT
here is a link to the IBOT article on msnbc, with a picture of it standing up on two wheels, balancing the rider. if the guy leans back or forward, the chair compensates fast enough to keep from tipping over.

You're missing my point entirely. Ibot is a whole different beast. The segway only has 2 wheels, and is very low powered, there's no way in hell it's going to lug a person up the stairs, unless someone has a death wish.

then again, maybe ill just watch the show tomorrow morning and then form an opinion, I've been wrong before 😛

hmmm Anyone Here Been To The Las Vegas Strip Lately.... There is Miles & Miles to Walk Just to see all the casino's & If you wanna go to the attractions in them too than there is even more... They Already Rent Golf Carts Out to people to save on walking & Have Bicycle Pulled Cabs Patrolling the strip & if these things are allowed on the sidewalk than there going to be about 10 times faster than anything on the road at there mere 12mph... At a large mall instead of walking around for 6 hours killing your feet ride around for a dime... Or a Zoo, Or COuntless Other Places..... If There Allowed everywhere that walking is they Will be a sucess....

what i want to know is how they are gonna stop from running into each other at 15 miles an hour...lotsa drunk people on scooters going 15 miles and hour in vegas...haha now that would be an amazing sight =)...would prostitutes be on them too?...rofl

haha actually just the idea of being on one of these drunk really amuses me =)

Muffy, your comment was:

<< According to cnet this thing is supposed to navigate stairs, and be impossible to tip over? lol, this I gotta see. I think a certain site needs to learn the laws of physics. >>

My point was:

The precedence for a self-balancing machine on two wheels has already been set. If you haven't seen the IBOT, then go look at it; Ginger takes the same basis for this (which allows self-balance on two wheels and the ability to climb stairs) and expands on it in a different direction.

I didn't miss your point, but I think you missed mine. Hopefully this elaboration helps. Simply put: this device will be able to do, technically speaking, everything that Kamen claims. Whether it will be as revolutionary as he hopes is anybody's guess, but technically speaking, Kamen will not miss a point. If he claims it, it happens. 🙂

<< what i want to know is how they are gonna stop from running into each other at 15 miles an hour >>

the article addressed this and he said that it's no different than 2 people bumping into one another, the machines can compensate for it.

yeah but i think there will be a lot more running into people then when people are walking

<< yeah but i think there will be a lot more running into people then when people are walking >>

Maybe, but maybe not; I'm not sure that at 3x the normal walking speed, people would be necessarily running into each other, unless there were thousands of these things on convential sidewalks. Kamen, I think, is saying that if this invention becomes used, it may change the way cities are designed - meaning that downtown streets would be populated with these instead of cars. Before you say that will never happen, it's a model that is very popular currently in Munich and other German cities; areas for pedestrians only. These areas would become significantly easier to navigate, in redesigned cities, with use of this machine.

OK Entity, point taken. One more thing I'd like to add 🙂 I saw a video of ibot a long time ago when they first started talking about IT. and if I remember corrrectly the way IBOT climbed stairs was by using at least 4 wheels, 2 came over the top of the other wheels and so forth, in a circular motion while climbing. This way it was always hugging the stairs. If segway really has only 2 wheels, that would be some balancing act and I could be wrong but this I gotta see. I'll watch and eat crow tomorrow.
