IT revealed...no really, it's on time's website, it's a sc00ter

the other thread was just guesses, i noticed on FW that there was a thread on it and sure enough time.com has pictures and everything. IT is called the Segway. nifty little thing, i was hoping for something a little cooler 🙁

Segway

click the little interactive on the right of the photo to see a diagram thingy (no real pics, just cad stuff).

<< I think i want my bicycle more than this thing.... 100% no emssions and its about 125lbs lighter >>

and doesnt cost $3,000

sure would suck if it got stolen...

<< I think i want my bicycle more than this thing.... 100% no emssions and its about 125lbs lighter >>

well this is 100% no emissions, there is no engine, motor, throttle, brake, etc. carries the average person all day non-stop for 5 cents...wont be popular in the US i dont think, but in china, etc. most likely.

The article claims no motors, yet the interactive pic clearly points to a few motors. Misinformation left and right, and how the hell is this thing supposed to get you places on 5 cents worth of electricity without the (duh) motor that uses that electricity? Pfft.

<< "Now, stop," Kamen says. How? This thing has no brakes. "Just think about stopping." Staring into the middle distance, I conjure an image of a red stop sign--and just like that, Ginger and I come to a halt. >>

Wow, its telepathiclly controlled!

I'm still saying its a huge social experiement. A friend of mine put it an interesting way today. "IT" doesn't really exist, kamen put out the information with the hopes that corporate greed would take over and cause some other company to release "IT" first, because he couldn't do it.

Yeah...what's the deal?

Either way, this is kind of disappointing to me...I was expecting something more universal in use (such as a new form of engine or something). Also, something that wouldn't be nearly useless to me (living in suburbia with a relatively long winter). 🙁

In our lazy society which depends highly on convenience, such a thing would not be practical. Just a few things worth considering:

1) where would you park this expensive device
2) how could such a slow moving device be allowed on streets in large numbers?
3) how does the rider get protection from the elements? i.e. rain, snow
4) is it light enough to lug up three flights of stairs?

there is a pic of him riding it on the new york times webpage, and im sure, if it's on tv tomorrow as expected, they will show it being ridden. folks like grove and jobs wouldnt be saying the things they have if it was made up.

i think they meant engine, as in no power source. the motors would just be servo type jobs? dunno, they should have said engine.

apparently cities are supposed to be designed around it. developing countries and cities would be first, with the larger cities, like the US, to follow. im sure eventually that there would be a "shell" type thing. you expect me to go riding around on concrete in texas when it's 110 in the summer? no thanks...

Hm.. Let me think about this... I can either drive to work in my air-conditioned vehicle, equipped with all the creature comforts known to man; music, cellular phone, the works. Not to mention the convenience of munching on a burrito or sipping on a coffee while listening to my favorite CD. OR...... I can get out of bed a hour or two earlier, drag some heavy awkward two wheeled device out of my house, walk downstairs and warm the thing up then drive at the speed of a slow jog all the way to work - most likely without my beifcase and Laptop. I think not! The inventor has quite the pipe dream doesn't he? He's definitely underestimaded how lazy North Americans are, and how much we like out automobiles and all the comforts that go with them.

Exactly, now where is the flying car? I read about it a while back and then boom it disappeared. Unless this scooter can travel faster then my car... I can see no advantage or reason why anyone would but this piece of sh*t. Just get a motorcycle for a few thousand more and enjoy the ride.!
