On the one forum I do still run that used to get hit with spam, spammers ALWAYS put "england" as their location, no idea why. So I just made a script that if a new user registers with that location the account just gets deleted. As an extra measure I also made everything go into a moderation queue. They see their own post and think it made it through, but nobody else except admin/mods see it. I can then ban/delete from within the post.

I did not implement that on the new forum yet, I probably should before I release it. Captchas may also help for first time posts but that can be kinda annoying for users too, and lot of spammers got those figured out and use OCR.

I have my spam filters in pretty top condition. If anything does get through it will NEVER see the light of day.

Reminds me when I got a carefully crafted E-mail that looked like it came from Comcast. It said I need to confirm new terms and they had a login where you'd happily enter your Comcast E-mail and password.

Well, not being a complete idiot in cybersecurity. I opened the link in this site: https://www.browserling.com/ when I entered some fake crap into the E-mail and password box and solved the captcha. It accepted and said thank you. So right there I knew this was a phisher who created a fake page. I even discovered it didn't matter how you entered the captcha as well. All were valid.

So naturally I started feeding this noob fake E-mail and password pairs and saying like my E-mail was fuck you, etc. and then reported his domain to Namecheap I think it was. That site was gone in a day. LOL!

I had an interesting paypal one a while back. Someone donated money to me (that part really happened, was legit) but I got an email that was crafted to look like it came from Paypal and that the person who donated (they even had the right name and everything) wants their money back because it was accidental. What's odd is that it never asked me to click any link, just asked me to go to Paypal and initiate the transfer. So I emailed the person just to see if it was the case but it was not. Emailed Paypal and they said it was a scam. Wonder what that scam was actually trying to do, and how they knew someone donated to me.

That sounds like you have been probed in more than one way already. They already know certain key information about you. I'd make sure your router firmware is always updated. LOL I use ASUS Merlin myself. The router is one method, but it could have been any number of others. Perhaps the payee was hacked.

I do wonder sometimes, as I also get fake shipment notifications (viruses) and it's only when I order something online. But with everybody selling our info to everybody these days, they probably get that info from "legit" sources. Like my CC company probably sells my info, Paypal probably sells my info, etc... And eventually the ones who send spam (probably all automated) buy it.

You should diversify your E-mail addresses based on usage. For me I have an E-mail just for Amazon, my bank, PayPal, eBay, my host and a couple other very important sites. If I ever get spam there I can trace the vector. Most times I never get spam in this inbox, and if I do I know that the most likely vector is some schmuck sold me out on eBay. Or he/she had their E-mail contacts stolen via malware. When I do get spam at this inbox I immediately report it to spamcop, and that pretty much takes care of that problem.

I also have an yahoo E-mail for signing up for online crap and forums. Then I use GMX.com for others that I know may have a higher potential of being spammed, but I need this E-mail to be solid. So since I can block whole domains at GMX, I use them.

I even bought my own domain for E-mail for resumes and other professional correspondence.

All of these are used in Thunderbird except the Yahoo account.

You do use Linux full time, don't you? I can't imagine getting any malware, but I know it's out there for Linux.

So, how is it I am tripping the spam detection, yet, there are still tons of other actual spam posts sitting on the forums?

Or is this one of the perks of being a "lifer"? :p
