Isn't public schooling too damn expensive?

1/3 going to fail?
unless americans are really dumb as they say, your figure is way too high.

Education IS a right.

Most parents don't know how to teach maths, and you'd have no quality control.

Also how you're gonna learn difficult stuff "from the internet"? Reading wikipedia?

Public education does not want to make people smarter. People have to learn culture and social interaction to be able to work, and the basic subjects so that they can go on with their studies.

Don't even compare amateur mothers and fathers to public schools, they trounce them, even more than private.

This thread actually got me thinking. I have many friends that went to private schools and many other friends and myself who went to public school. Now that most of us are in late 20's and 30's, I realized how funny I find it that ALL of my friends who went to public school make more than ALL of my friends who went to private school. It has no direct bearing on this thread, but it's amusing to think that. Personally I don't have kids but if I ever do I intend to send them to public school. That is unless Republicans have their way and they completely decimate the public school system.

I don't think how much money you make is an indication of education. By that measure a Buddhist monk is mentally retarded and illiterate. Not to mention you can not judge even salary based on your sample size.

Nationally the number speak for themselves. Private do better in every statistic.

Considering that 1/3 of the students are going to fail or aren't even going to make it to high school, considering that education isn't a right, and considering how well voluntary home or neighborhood schooling works, how much cheaper it is, and how much more efficient it is (6 hours/day in a public school can be done better at home in 3), I think that public schooling is a waste.

Too many students screw it up for the rest, and you can learn off the internet these days.

Private school teachers get paid way less than their public school counterparts and that's ridiculous.

People also don't gain much intelligence from education. They're either born dumb or they're born smart. But idiots like Obama and Hillary "big money pimpin'" Clinton say that public education FORCED AT GUN POINT will make everyone smarter.

What good has public education done? I can understand vouchers at the state level maybe, but public education is a waste and it really sucks.

First time I have ever agreed with ya . Whats even more interesting is the cost of the bus ride to and from school Cost per student is insane. The getting to school and home is the parents job not the publics

After I trasferred from private to public school in 10th grade . I never had to open a book everthing was a review of what I had already learned. I sucked in all studies other than Science and history were I was a stand out.

One of the local ones does, just not mine. So, I'll forgo buses and frisbee golf for an excellent education for my kid. I know it's a risk but what the heck.

Caring parents. Color me surprised.

There maybe some truth to that but it's hard to quantify. When I see homeless I say "he got c's and d's see what happens boy" but other than that I don't do much policing and they still gets A's. yes their school still gives real grades.

Problem is If you are close to a public school they have to let you on the bus in my state.

When I grew up if you loved within 1/2 a mile you got no bus. Not sure if that is still the case. I am sure some kid got ran over, kidnapped, etc... and it got cut.

I wanted to ride my bike to school but we were about 1 1/2 miles away. That and my parents said no before I even found out how far it was. :D

When I went to private school I learned nothing new, other than you better pray or get paddled. Went back to public and was about the same. But I scored very high in math but low in english. When i say low I mean average to maybe a tick above.

This is so true . I daycare my grandchildren at least 3 days a week . I have today and yesterday off . But my 4 year old grandson is way ahead of his age group by leaps and bounds his math skills surprise even myself and his volcabulary is higher than most high school grads,

I never use a word that a do not define for him and math somehow he just knows . Daighter had parent conferance recently and they told here his placement in grade school was going to be very interesting , They told here who ever is teaching him now should be the way they continue . Daughter said that would be his grandfather which shocked the teacher.

Ya i got the paddle which I fully deserved But I hated the dictionary with hand outstretched the most, one in each hand. It was extremely painful but again I deserved everthing I got.

I think your example just points out what I am many say, its not the schools but the parents.
I can try and teach you but if you don;t want to learn or have a support group(parents) it will never take no matter how good I am.

My 2 year old son speaks 2 langs better then some other 2 year olds speak 1. Of course he also knows how to take things apart to well from me showing him. Every time he sees me use a tool he learns how to use it right away. So when I saw he trying to remove the screws from the bedroom door I had to hide my tools better. ;)

My boy found my hand planes. Wish he hadn't practiced on the black cherry I'd been saving.:(

You took my statement out of context . Is what I ment to say was if ya lived far enough out . If your high school (private ) was close to a public school as mine was . Right across the street .In the late 60,s the state changed its no bussing of private school children . They had to let you ride. I biked or walked until 11 grade at which time I drove.
