It wasn't the thought that they could have won, it was the utter subjugation and humiliation the world put the Germans through. They destroyed their economy, forced them to print Marks to pay, annexed parts of the country when they couldn't, gutted industries, destroyed the banks, made the government lackies. If you ever look at those political quizzes that show the X/Y axis (see below), both Obama and Hillary fall onto the authoritarian side, it's just that the GOP falls WAY into the authoritarian side. Then there are those who are ACTUALLY on the left. There's a reason that Bernie is popular, he's the first candidate in who knows how long that actually is left wing at all. Unfortunately the public is a bit too authoritarian in this country, thanks mostly to fear based rhetoric. (For reference most people I know that actually hold left wing view fall about halfway into the bottom left quadrant, myself included)

To me the biggest thing when looking at those is the authoritarian vs libertarian. Left or right means little to me. At the end of the day what does it matter if govt at the end of the gun forces you to buy Ford or if the govt owns ford? Both are authoritarian. Where as the idea of collective or individualistic policy at the libertarian level is totally voluntary. Plus the concept of left and right changes over time. Since the 1930s liberals have sat within the upper left quadrant. Before that, liberals right or left occupied the lower half.

Here's a simple flowchart to help you determine if someone is left wing or right wing.
Use violence and racism to maintain the current state of everything -> right wing.
Use violence and racism to change the state of everything -> left wing.

If Hitler wanted to use violence of the state to keep Jews in positions of power and claim that Aryans were the inferior race, he would be right wing. Replace Jew with white and Aryan with black and you get the same idea. Keep whites in power because blacks are inferior -> right wing.
Swap it around and it becomes left wing. Make your cabinet 50% women because who the hell cares about things like merit and experience? Left wing. Vote for Obama just because he's black or vote for Hillary just because she's a woman -> left wing.
Vote for Romney just because he's white -> right wing.

This almost feels like a game one could play with elementary school kids. Throw out a racist situation and let them figure out if it's a left or ring wing position.
