You were in the right. If she didn't speak English, then your statement was factually correct, and you were therefore right. If she did speak English then she understood what you said and your abusive words were the correct reaction to her obnoxiousness.

Seriously, just saying "Lady it says 12 items or less" would have been just fine. Same would be fine for any other race, or a guy doing the same thing. Honestly I think you only said that cause you could. An old asian lady isn't going to kick your ass, so yes I think you crossed the line.

When I worked as a cashier I had a few people come up to my cash when I was working express, and ask me if they could go through my cash while only holding a few items. I would tell them it was ok, and then they would call over their husband with a full cart who was around the corner.

How did he know that she didn't know english? Would he have said that if the person was white? No and there are plenty of illiterate whites out there.

I went into WalMart once to pick up 2 five gallon buckets of paint to paint the interior of my garage (fresh sheet rock). I am walking down the isle with a bucket in each hand and I am in a hurry because it's my lunch break.
Two couples are standing in the isle blocking it while as they had a discussion. I assumed they were friends who had run into each other. I blurted out, "Jesus fucking Christ! Just block the whole fucking isle!"
They were shocked as was I. I felt a little embarrassed but the 3 tooths deserved it.

I hope someone goes off on you in another country when you can't read a sign and do something wrong. I feel that is unlikely however because if you look like a foreigner in this fictional other country someone would probably just be willing to give you a hand and help you understand that you were not following directions in the same way that you should have here.
It sounds like the people around you being agitated by this lady made you feel like saying something and while saying something was warranted, what you said was not.
I hope someone goes off on you in another country when you can't read a sign and do something wrong.
