We don't have people driving through our highway and train systems who speak a different language primarily (at least, not in large numbers and with little consistency). English is the majority language - it is the language of businesses above fast food restaurants, so it's a bit hard to get around without it. If English were not the "official" language of England, then would you demand that Britons demanding that foreigners speak the primary language would be arrogant?

There is too much convenience nowadays and an even larger amount of impatience. I would have just pretended in my head that there were two people ahead of me instead of one... justifying the overage of items.

reminds me of when me and my very asian looking friend got pulled over for going like 6 over and the cop asked him "do ya speak english?"in a slightly strong country accent. when in fact he is actually well spoken (think connie chung here) and an english major.

I live in a very isolated country (and I wouldn't consider USA isolated in any case) where the official language is English (and Maori) but no one would be excused for acting like a wanker like the OP. What if the lady was a tourist? Should all tourists be fluent in English? I don't personally think so. Anyway, I don't think this is an "arrogant American" thing. I think this is just an asshole thing, and there are assholes everywhere.

was that wrong? everyone was getting irritated at the lady though. what a tool.

If that was me you said that to the last thing you are going to remember is a jar of Hellmann's Mayonaisse over your skull followed by fresh from the oven baked italian bread right up your ass.

Oh by the way, yes, lady should have read the signs but you were a complete jackass about it.

I agree with this post except for the baked Italian bread part, I love fresh bread too much to waste it so.

When you work in customer service, you aren't allowed to go off on customers.

If you had only stated "miss you cannot use 30 items at self checkout, next time please use a regular aisle" then you would have been good.

How long do you plan on having this job?

I'm pretty sure the sign was in English. Official language is really moot, if you can't read/speak English you are not -able- to follow many of the simple rules of society which could have much worse results than checking out 30 items in a 12 item or less lane.

"no right on red"
"do not block the intersection"
"left exit only"

More than likely she just didn't read the sign like many other shoppers have done. Drivers who don't slow down at STOP signs and just blaze through probably could read English, too, or recognize the color red but they do it anyway. What does that tell you?

So...you are telling me that instead of confronting the woman and letting her know you chose the p*ssy passive agressive route.

That they were able to understand the message, but didn't care.

Which is very different than someone who cares, but doesn't understand the message.

dartworth's point was that English must be an official language to expect people living here to understand it. Which is completely moot to the point. Many-many-many things are only in English. If you can't read/speak English, you will not be able to follow the rules of society nearly as much as someone who can.

While it'd be nice to make English an official language, it's not necessary for this case... It's a private store, not a government institution. Their signs are in English. Being able to read English is a requirement to following the stores rules for shopping there.
