I filled up at a gas station at an interstate exit in Greensboro, NC once and the total came to about $30. I went inside to pay and only had a couple of $100 bills and less than $15 in smaller bills. I gave them one of the 100's and they said they couldn't change it. They did not accept anything larger than a 50. I told them I didn't have it in smaller bills and they made me stand around and wait for about 20 minutes until they "took in" enough im smaller bills to make change. I find it hard to believe that a busy gas station at an interstate exit in the middle of the day did not have $70 in bills. I think they just made me wait around to "punish" me for not following their policy. :|

At numerous places I've worked, we have to drop all denominations over $20 into a time-released safe after receiving them.

On top of that, most change drawers will get a till of $100 in these establishments. If they give you all the cash they have in the drawer, WTF are they supposed to do when someone needs change for a $10 or $20?

What if they just cashed out the drawer, or did a money drop?

this happened to me at a 7/11. however, they said they had to wait a few minutes before they could get the change. i was paying with a $100 for some hotdogs and a soda. I didn't have enough in loose change to pay for them and only had that large bill. There's no reason the gas station couldn't have waited until they could open the drawer and get the change.

That would be just like you buying something from me via paypal and saying "i don't have enough to send the whole amount but here's what i can send and if you don't accept i'm calling the police!'

how would that make sense? lol

there aren't many places that accept payment afterwards but amen to those that do. mad people are driving off without paying? get some security cameras for cryin out loud!

Do you understand what the meaning of "time-release safe" is? It's not a safe that opens every 5 mintues. It's a safe that opens up at very specific times, or only with the District Manager's and Store Manager's Key when used together. Or the Armored Trucks' Key + Store Manager's Key.

Also, if the gas station doesn't have the bills, whats the difference if they open the drawer or not?

i said that if its time released they could wait until it opened. i did for my food at 7/11 until they could get the change (took 20 minutes)

I do that quite a bit. If I put the card in at the pump, but the n it tells me to see cashier and/or declines the card, I go to another station. I know the funds are good--I don't need the hassle of going inside, waiting in line, etc.
Yet you'll go to the hassle of driving to a different station? :p

I can quickly hit another station. It;s not like I live in Mayberry and have to go to Mt. Pilot to get to the next Fillin' station....

It'd be illegal for him to deibt your card $40 if he only sold you $32 worth of product.

Did you know that there are two ways to process a debit card? One is to process it like cash and the other way is to put a hold on it like a credit card. So if the guy said no cash back, then either hes trying to pocket the money (highly unlikely) or when you prepaid for $40, there was only a hold for 40 and once finished the actual amount was taken out.

I don't know about that. There might be some basis for this along the same lines as minimum labor charges. IE like car labor. Some places are $60 hour, $150 minimum. You might not need 2.5 hours of labor, but you get charged for it anyway...

Do you know what filing a false police report means?

Not to mention if they have CCTV cameras and others are present.

This has got me infuriated...

Today I went to fill up my Civic with gas, and my debit card was denied at the pump, with a message to see the cashier. When I went inside to pay him, he asked how much I wanted to put in. As usual, I said I am going to fill up (a tank usually lasts me 3 weeks) and I will be back to get my debit card.

When I start to leave, he stops me and says I have to give him an amount, in $10 denominations, (for ex. $10, $20 or $30) or he can't give me gas. I looked at him and said I don't know how much I am putting in, and he said he has to know a number. Fine, I tell him $40 (to make sure I get a full tank) and he asks me if I am sure, because he cannot give me change!!!

In other words, if I paid $40 and put $32 in gas, I will be out $8 extra! I said to the guy that this is a bullshit policy, and he said you can buy it and leave, or go before I call the police to have you removed.

At this point, I just left because I didn't want to get more angry.

I can't believe this sh!t. Not only are gas prices jumping off the roof, now we got greedy attendants pulling stunts like this.

Certainly this is illegal?

Cliffs-
- Went to buy gas, debit card refused at pump
- Told I had to purchase gas in $10 increments, no change will be given if I don't use the whole amount.
- Got semi-angry, was threatened to be arrested.
- Posted rant on ATOT
total bullshit. report him to the BBB, your local congressman, and anyone else who will listen.

As I said, this may well be violating the terms and conditions of the card merchant agreement.

Bullshit, I work at a gas station. If you get 8 dollars left over, YOU CAN get recharged again with the correct amount from the previous purchase easily. I'll bet you the cashier is retarded IMO. But I'll do the same, I would rather ask the exact amount rather than a true fill up, just incase the card stinks on me lol.

Then again, you can always use credit (visa or mastercard) which really doesn't make a difference to be honest.
