Is this exercise, or is this damage?

I always wondered something. So say today, I took out the trash, and I had to take 5 different bags out. So I grab a bag, run down 3 flights of stairs, outside to the dumpster, then back up 3 flights of stairs to the apartment, grab another bag, and repeat. When I'm done, I'm sweating, but I'm also kind of stressed - it wasn't something I wanted to be doing. But my heart is pounding, I'm sweating, and I definitely need a shower.

Was this exercise? Or was this just a stressful activity that wasn't good for me because I knew I had to do it, so I was only focusing on getting it done and not on getting exercise?

Exercise is really just any physical activity that elicits a significant sympathetic response. If you're running away from a guy with a gun, that's exercise. You have the choice whether to make it stressful or not. A lot of people with panic disorder have problems with exercise due to the increased heart rate. They feel like they're going to have a panic attack since the increased heart rate is synonymous with an episode. It's exercise, man. Change your mindset and reap the benefits.

Seriously Matt, you worry WAY too much about everything. Nobody likes to take the trash out, but most people realize there are things you do just because you have to, and don't stress about it.

But of course going up and down the stairs 5 times is exercise. Hell, it's more exercise than 50%+ of Americans get in a typical day. I went on a cruise last week, and lost 2 pounds during the week. I ate like crazy but almost always took the stairs instead of the elevator, and lifted weights a few times as well, but I always feel like using the stairs is the key to me not gaining weight on cruises.

I used to get a panic response when I first started working out, especially if I was dehydrated. I never thought about the causes, though. Interesting.

Yeah, the main theory on perception of fear and panic is that the input from physiological sources (whether it be stress, exercise, or a rabid pit bull) is brought to the brain. Those with panic disorder tend to overreact to the sympathetic response (increased blood pressure, heart rate, etc) and interpret the stimulus as catastrophic. The following URL explains a bit more technically:

http://books.google.com/books?id=g1...ge&q=theory%20of panic perception&f=false

Btw, can anybody tell me how to link I used to? With the link and a text? I can't figure out how to do it on the new forums.

The easiest way:
User CP > Settings & Options > Edit Options > Miscellaneous Options > Message Editor Interface > Select "Enhanced Interface" from the drop down list and press Save Changes
Then you can use the button that looks like this:
createlink.gif
to create links.

Or you can type it out every time:
