I found this not to be racist, I think the ones who wrote the article expressed their opinion and had hard facts to back up their article. It's even sadder that the students couldn't solve this rationally by discussing but by threatening with bodily harm only making themselves look even worse.

What's wrong with truth? I don't see anything racist about it. Latino moms are some of the slowest bunch of people I've ever met but with a loud mouth.

I don't find the article racist, but too generalising.

My "hispanic" friend whose parents came from Panama and Costa Rica excelled in college (University of Washington) and graduated with magna cum laude, and is an associate in an architectural firm in the Silicon Valley Area.

His father was an civil engineer who runs his own firm in Seattle, and his mother, who by the way was a very nice person, was an artist.

While my "asian" friend whose family originated from Taiwan, got into Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, dropped out, and is now working in his brother in law's business.

His father was an opthalmologist, and his mother a nurse, both worked at a hospital in Manhattan.

Just goes to show that simple generalisation should be taken with a grain of salt.

In public schools it's far more important to be PC than encourage actual education.

I laughed at that. I felt bad, but I laughed at it.

I'm laughing as I'm typing this and I feel no remorse.

The writer stated facts which have been proven. I don't hear anyone arguing against the facts presented, they're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Just because someone whines about something and cries racism doesn't mean anything.

NCLB requires schools to report on data, and requires data differentiated among "races"

Yes, it's a cultural difference. I just completed a ton of research on the topic.

No, the article isn't racist... it's pointing out racial differences.
If you belong to a race that you feel was portrayed poorly, then do something about it: start studying and working harder in school. It's not a matter of ability - that's been demonstrated in plenty of studies.

This is a point of contention though, as numerous tests throughout the years have pointed out that there is in fact a difference in cognitive ability among races. Not every race has the same average IQ. It varies substantially along racial lines.

Whether you want to test the IQ's of 5 year olds who just started school, 15 year olds, SAT scores or aptitude scores of adults, there are very consistent differences among races. Of course people will try to present a politically correct reason for all of this, but if you look at SAT scores or any other mental aptitude test you will find that the scores closely follow the average IQ of that group. The group with the highest IQ consistently gets the highest SAT scores, ACT scores, just about every score.

This isn't politically correct to talk about, but it is true.

Clearly, the people crying racism regarding this article has lazy shifty creek crossers for parents who don't care if they succeed in school...

I dont think it's racist at all...just the bitter truth. I graduated 9th in my HS class (4.1GPA) and had no hispanics in most of the AP classes.

I am a bit suspicious because it is written by an Asian. If it was a white or indian or something I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I would have to agree asian parents push their kids harder. But thats not always a good thing, some push too hard. I remember in HS seeing several Asian kids crying because they were getting an A- and their parents would be pissed and ground them, no tv etc.

There's a middle ground you need to find. I would guess that it falls under races simply because you're more likely to parent how your parents raised you.

First off, I am a Mexican and went to school in Alhambra. I didn't go to AHS I went to Mark Keppel HS and graduated in 96.

When reading this article you also have to know the history of that High School and of that city and the cities around it. Alhambra, Monterey Park, Rosemead all used to be primarily Hispanic areas. In the late 80s throughout the 90s Asians started coming in by the freaking thousands. Just FLOODED the area. This obviously caused some major racial tension between the established people in the area and the "New People" who are coming and "invading" their city. I remember race fights at MKHS all the time. So keep in mind that racial tension is already high at that school and in that area.

With that in mind I would say the article is not untrue. I just don't think the people that it was being released to, High School Students, are mature enough to understand that something isn't racist just because it's negative against a certain race. I know that if an article like that would have come out at MKHS when I was going there a lot of my friends would have been very upset. Fighting mad. Not because they were Dumb Mexicans, but because they were only 16 and kids.

That being said I would also disagree with certain parts of the article. Just because you don't succeed in high school does not automatically mean you are going to be a blue collar failure in life. I'm not saying it will help, but it doesn't mean auto life failure either. I know more than a few Mexicans from my class that didn't do good in High School that are doing great in real life. I also know of a few Asians that were great in High School that didn't do anything with their lives.

Dude the thing is Hispanics may not be that great at school, but they are good at other things. You know like socializing, sports, etc. In the long run I think getting decent grades and having social/physical abilities is more valuable than getting a 4.0. You can have the best grades but if you are miserable and by yourself it doesn't matter. Unless you are Stephen Hawking, but I have never seen an Asian Stephen Hawking.

Using a racial stereotype like "lazy latino parents" and going even further by stating that it would be a waste of time to try to help these parents because most wouldn't be willing or able to put time into their children is pretty out there.

Tackling the issue in a school newspaper is probably a bad idea. One race patting themselves on the back while pointing out the shortcomings of another in a state funded publication probably won't make many people happy reguardless of the subject.

It's not politically correct to admit that humans, like any other creature on Earth, evolve. Since people in different continents evolve in different environments it stands to reason that we all evolve in slightly different paths.

We might as well argue why there aren't many Asians in the NBA, or why there's not many successful white sprinters, or a sub-saharan african wouldn't make a good eskimo.
