Eh?

  • Completely inappropriate the instructor should have simply answered the question and left it at that

No, we don't. There's no circumstance in which this friendly small-talk returning of a question would be "inappropriate."

On the other hand, there ARE circumstances where the questions might be VERY relevant to subject of the class.

I couldnt get trough the first page of this one. Now in most cases if the penis comes out or titties end up in your hand then yes its inappropriate. Just beware of the creep factor. As in enough small talk and social norms for people to not think your a creep.

If your a teachers assistant then coitus isnt an issue since your basically a peer no different than a hall monitor in grade school.

At the end of the lab period, a student turns in their lab report, and then proceeds to ask a couple of personal questions along the lines of "Have you always lived in <name of city>?" Since the instructor is the one expected to maintain a proper distance with his or her students, would you consider it inappropriate if the instructor then asked "What about you? Where are you from?", potentially showing an interest in that student? And how would other students overhearing the conversation perceive it? Particularly, if both participants in said conversation were smiling and friendly with each other?

Happens all the time, even high school. I have seen these while in school. Yes its flirtation sometimes more. also inappropriate.

Had a professor in college who is a major in the air force. The women was flirting with professor. On halloween I was in school classroom and saw the 2 women waiting for the professor to finish lecturing. they were giggling. When the professor finished his class he left with the women. Both women got A in the calculus class and both were so dumb in class too. LOL

Wait...he never specified the student was a female, nor that it wasn't himself.

No parody thread from the instructor about how he was merely having a conversation with OP and OP took it sexually?

I don't see anything wrong with the example in the OP's post. Perhaps if we were talking about high school students, I might raise an eyebrow. Younger than High School, and I might say the teacher should curb their small talk. But college, no issues.
