Is there anything wrong with the Southern US?

I hear my friends all the time say people in North East are so rude, obnoxious, fast paced, yada yada yada, and that the "South is great". They walk down the street, people say hi, so friendly, etc.

Seriously: I never hear anything bad about the Southern US. Is there anything bad?

IE: Northeast = Cold, rude people, etc.

Southerners will smile as they stab you in the back, most Northerners aren't used to it. Just because people are being polite doesn't make them nice.

I pretty much constantly hear that the South is full of inbred morons, but having lived in the Midwest and the Northeast and having been brought up in the South, I can say that it's not just the South.

Excruciatingly hot summers, mosquitoes, some southern baptist denominations, racism, and the "good ol' boy politickin'" that goes on around here. But yeah, it's great otherwise.

People really are friendly, and parts of the south have (IMO) some of the most beautiful scenery there is.

You need to decode that. All the temperatures are the same.

hot = no humidity
really hot = 50% humidity
OMG It's Hot! = 100% humidity

I will say this: The average person on the street seemed more educated in New York than they do down here. I'm talking about basic things like history, science, computer use, etc. The women are way hotter down here though.

I've only lived in the NE, but I've travelled a lot, and spent time in Virginia and the Carolinas. People are definitely more laid back the further south you get, and aren't afraid to simply walk up to you and offer you help if you look like you need it. Even up in Vermont people don't do that, they simply walk by and ignore you, and overall people are more rude up there.

Now I live in the west, and it's pretty different as far as people act, but it's pretty nice so far.

It's fine. I moved to Atlanta eight years ago. I moved from Michigan, where I lived for 24 years. What someone said earlier about smiling to your face and stabbing you in the back is true. People in the north and midwest tend to be more direct. If they don't like you or a situation you know it. In the south people are more "polite", which translates into "I'm nice to your face but I stab you in the back later".

Overall it's a great place to live. It gets down to the 20's and 30's in the winter and we have the occasional flurry (which shuts down the city). The summers are hot. It gets nearly as hot in Michigan during the summer, but it is for a much shorter period of time.

People who fall back on stereotypes likely have little to no idea what they are talking about. There are just as many (if not more) rednecks in Michigan as there are in Georgia.

Up north and on the west coast, they're not just more educated, but more ambitious to get more education or more training or some other means of bettering themself.

Down here it's way more laid back. People are very happy with what they have

It's your own values which determine which is "better"

Hotter girls, yes. And the hot weather means they dress way down for half the year

I will add this caveat though: if you're an Asian guy (and I know many members of this forum are), you better bring your A game if you want to get anywhere with them.

[Edit] Grew up in California, lived in Oklahoma for 1 year, Texas for 3 years.

Abalama? Is that in some middle eastern country?

My extended family is all from NJ or West Virginia, but for some reason most of them migrated en masse to Alabama. I don't mind visiting my grandparents down there, but I wouldn't want to live there.
