Values and prejudices in small towns in the north are practically identical to those of small towns in Arkansas. Your example only shows the negative aspects of a "small town" mentality, not a mentality that is exclusive to the south.
Yes, we can see by Mo0o's knee jerk reaction and rush to judge an entire area based on one example that he's free of prejudice and bias...

What's wrong with the south... Hmmmm

Food - Can anyone south of the Mason-Dixon line make good pizza? It doesn't seem like it. Oh, and FYI, buffalo wings are supposed to be served with blue cheese, not ranch dressing. Don't give me that idiotic look like you've never heard of such a thing. Beef on weck, anyone? Any southern food worth eating can easily be found in the Northeast. Grits, on the other hand, can not be ordered in any restaurant in the northeast.

Education in many of the southern states... Apparently it's not that important. That's why so many of us Yankees end up moving south - employers are desperate for hard working educated people. (I put my resume online for New York, North Carolina, and South Carolina. 5 months after I began teaching, I still received phone calls every week, "Mr. <last name>, hi, I'm from <school district in NC or SC>. We have an opening for a math teacher. You start Monday. We'll pay your moving expenses. Pretty please?" (I'm not kidding - I almost wish I was.)

Red dirt.

Southerners don't make homemade fresh maple syrup. You've got a pancake house for every 10 residents, but you can't get real maple syrup in a single one of them. (Yeah, this is the second part on food, but most people eat a couple meals a day.)

Believe it or not, northerners move down here and open up restaurants. I know its shocking, but true. I have two choices of great pizza from families who have fairly recently moved down from the NE. I also grew up going to a restaurant that was started by transplants from Buffalo, NY. They had great wings.

Apparently education isn't that important? are you kidding me? It was huge in my area. If you weren't going to college after HS, you were clearly looked down upon.

You want the real reason that you were offered teaching jobs so quickly? The population is booming. We need teachers because new schools are popping up about as fast the hundreds of thousands of homes.

Red dirt? It is called clay, and yes it sucks.

You put us down for not making maple syrup? Are you really that dense?
Dont lie to yourself, education levels in the south are consistently lower than the north/west. Plus rarely do things like this: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2446354 happen in the north

Don't lie to myself? I never said that they weren't lower than those of the north and west, but the poster I quoted said "Apparently it's not that important." Then he continued to imply that we need more teachers because we can't find enough locals to hire. How about the fact that all across the country people aren't going into teaching. It isn't our fault that so many people are moving here.

And you shouldn't think so highly of your own state. In comparison to even some of the southern states, it is has nothing to brag about with regards to education.

And don't link to some BS like that as if it is representative of the south on the whole. You've gotta be kidding me...

Ahh yes... I remember that... sucks for the guy who died having it with a horse. Which then lead to an investigation and boom. WTF?...

But as you can see, that was 2005... the law prohibiting sex with an animal was passed and signed by Gregoire on March 26th, 2006. I've also not seen any other major event in the news involving it, so yeap... It was passed 36-0 in the state senate, and 98-0 in the state HoR.

...uh, that wasn't the point. One can't say "Oh, gee, see what happened there in that podunk town? That whole region is messed up too!"

And dude, it doesn't matter whether a law was made against it or not, it is screwed up. :p

Well considering some schools are just now getting around to having integrated proms...

I lived in Louisiana for three years. It was a sh!thole. There were a lot of dumbfvcks and I couldn't stand the humidity.

I like the PNW. I just wish it didn't rain so much here in Seattle. Eastern Washington gets less rain (almost none) but it's hot as hell in the summer and way too cold in the winter.

Excruciatingly hot summers, mosquitoes, some southern baptist denominations, racism, and the "good ol' boy politickin'" that goes on around here. But yeah, it's great otherwise.

People really are friendly, and parts of the south have (IMO) some of the most beautiful scenery there is.
Bah, you're a Yankee. You're half way up to Monroe!

I will say this: The average person on the street seemed more educated in New York than they do down here. I'm talking about basic things like history, science, computer use, etc. The women are way hotter down here though. ;)

Mmmmm... Scantily-clad (weather), dumb, hot women - just how I like 'em.

Stereotypes being what they are, I have to say that I've seen less and less stereotypical southerners and northerners these days. However, I have noticed that the intensity of the stereotype increases in vacation areas. I grew up on the Outer Banks, and while tourist money kept everyone afloat, there could have been a lot less whining like:

Northerners
"Geez... How far do you have to go to a gas station?" (now they're everywhere)
"What do you mean, the nearest Wal-Mart's on the mainland?" (Now there's a Kmart in Nags Head)
(back in the 70's, 80's), "Geez it's so flat and desolate..."
(90's and today) "Geez, it's just like Virginia Beach... Why do we come down here?!" (I dunno, why do you...)
"Can you tell me who makes unsweet tea?!" (Anyone, just ask for unsweet).
"Why don't you do (X) like we do back in (X)? It's much better." (Why didn't you bring (X) with you? You'd probably be more agreeable?)

Southerners
"All I got to wear is my brazeere and cutoffs, but a girl's got to do what she's got to do" (30-something While holding a baby, beer, and a cig all at the same time).
"How far is it to OBX? We want bumber stickers" (I send them to Coinjock).
(early 80's) "Man, I need cable! The Winston 500 is today!)

both
"Why does everything cost so much?!" (because you'll pay for it)

BTW, this is absolutely true.

It's best here along the gulf coast. Other than the hurricanes, this is the place to be in the South.

I agree completely. Unfortunately, I'm in North Mississippi. :(

There are black holes for hot women like Oxford - Tuscaloosa & other towns to a lesser extent. It's pointless to tell people about it, they won't believe you. OTOH, move 20 miles from these towns and you're in a different world. Unlike in eastern Europe, where you see rich & poor gorgeous alike (Czech Rep.; Poland, Hungary), the social/economical barriers continue to segregate beauty.

The weather is hell for about 3 months, but you have two little summers before and after (mid-April--mid-June and September-October), and it never rains more than 2 days in a row. Fall is just before Thanksgiving and winter, well, it rains for three days then.

But in actuality, "lower education levels" don't lead people to really be less educated overall. There are still plenty of smart people in the south. However, they are a bit difficult to find in smaller towns like the one I'm from. :p

I hear my friends all the time say people in North East are so rude, obnoxious, fast paced, yada yada yada, and that the "South is great". They walk down the street, people say hi, so friendly, etc.

Seriously: I never hear anything bad about the Southern US. Is there anything bad?

IE: Northeast = Cold, rude people, etc.

Southerners will smile as they stab you in the back, most Northerners aren't used to it. Just because people are being polite doesn't make them nice. ;)

very true. I grew up in NC, and I find plenty of North Easterners to be just as nice, if not nicer than the typical southerner. On ave, less ignorant and racist too.

Thing about the South is that it's hot and humid most of the year. Those in big cities that experience heat only in the summer, know how your habits change to deal with it. You do things a little slower, move a little less, etc. Southerners have adapted that lifestyle year-round. They're (we're) just slower, is all :)

I think food in the south generally sucks, but that's just personal preference.

I haven't been everywhere, but they places in the south I have been were definitely different. Southern Florida was like a different country, with English dangerously close to being a second language, and whereas in other places I usually don't hear about church accept while actually at church, down in Luisiana it was raining bibles from every street corner.

Not really, I spent 3 years in the Peoples Republic and I can honestly say Californians are more fvkced up than the rest of us.
Not that the rest of us are wonderful, we're just not Californians.
