Here is a map that shows black population percentage by county. Yes, Atlanta is called the "Black Mecca", but the south has a large distribution of black people.

We even live peacefully together! I'm starting to wonder if my experience with better educated people in the North was a fluke.

This song sums it up pretty well
:music:
Wearing my scarf and my hat
And I squint and I sniff as I went around
Walked up the road through the woods
By the pines, by the lake as I heard the sound
Maria Anna Gamisou
Daughter of a dire in Oulu
Sang me a song or two
And I wrote them down
Up in the North, in the cold
In the ice, in the snow
She would cry and cry
There she would moan, she would whine
And the tears would pour down
And she would never
Angela Exema Milou
A servant girl in Turku
Sang me a song or two
And I wrote them down
Down in the South, in the heat
In the sweat, in the rain
She would cry and cry
There she would moan, she would whine
And the tears would pour down
And she would never
Melissa Jarmon Dupres - oo!
Sitting on a bench in Anjou
Sang me a song or two
And I wrote them down
Elias Doxia Didou
Son of a bitch back in Turku
Sang me a song or two
And I wrote them down
:music:

There are stereotypes for every group of people. Florida is full of retired people, etc.
In my travels, I have noticed a bit more outward amicable feelings towards strangers in the South, especially at local businesses.

It is almost as if you can skew polls, statistics, and other generalized data to fit any situation...

It is a big spread compared to the others, I'd like to see that broken down more. But still look at the areas that are 0-5%, pretty much everywhere north of the mason dixon line.

Very true, but notice the large number of 0-5% counties in the North.

Once you take out an overdose of literal Christianity and racism, not much.

I have realtives in both MA and NC.

My NC realtives are nice, friendly, good white Christian people, and are nice to other members of said categories. However, I've heard my Aunt and Uncle talk about "N!ggers" so often it makes me sick, and don't even hint that you're anything other then Christian. Not all of them are that way, but a considerable amount are.

My MA relatives are (for the most part) self-centered, fairly obnoxious, and not nearly as out-going. They'll be friendly, but it's a colder friendliness then you get in the south.

No, except there are too many yankees moving down here.

Put it this way: If the South wasn't the better place to be, why are so many northerners moving South, but very, very few Southerners moving north?

Hint: It ain't just the nicer weather.

As far as people seeming or actually being better-educated or more intelligent in one place or another, that just depends on where you go and who you hang out with.

There are dummies everywhere, and also smart people. There are a lot more factory worker-types up north, who tend to be less educated, so I don't see why the overall opinion is that Southerners tend to be less intelligent/educated, unless it's just the yankees not being able to get past the accents here.

I hate where I live (Slidell, Louisiana). The weather is absolutely horrible, and the people don't strike my fancy either. I found the general populace of other places I have visisted much more amiable.

I've never lived there, but have driven down a few times. I found it odd that people would just say hi out of nowhere, I'd be thinking "what do they want?". I'm born & raised in westchester, ny btw. Here you don't even look at strangers. I think it's a cultural thing; what one culture finds polite, another might find rude. With NY being a big culture clash it may be safer in it and areas like it to just mind one's own business, I don't think we're necessarily rude. And while it may be urban vs. rural rather than north vs. south, I can't agree with how the southern states voted in 2000, and even worse is the way they repeated their mistake in 2004.

Edit: Weather - no way I could live without snow. Summer in NY is nice, IMO, till July or so - then I'm sick of it and way too friggin hot. Give me snow any day.

I've lived in Texas, Alabama, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and California. Southerners are definitely much more fiendlier (and I'm Indian), especially when compared to people in Boston. Also, while there are a lot of hillbillies/inbred types in the South, Boston/Massachusetts certainly isn't lacking in them!

Other things I've noticed are that people in New England are short and of course Southerners are fat.

Californians are ok - not super nice, but not rude or mean.

Bostonians are as prejudiced as Southerners. They especially don't like those from third world countries like Haiti, India and NYC.

People in NE are definitely complete jerks. It gets better the further away you get from Boston, but not much.

One thing I've noticed about people here in the Southwest is that pretty much all the girls here are bi and proud of it. It's weird/awesome.

So you're saying people in boston suck?
