Probably. Espeically our dear Obama.

He might be the closest, but otherwise no one.

I don't really think people have much to remember Obama by, he hasn't done much in terms of a president ( yet? ), of course he was the first african american but come on... he doesn't have all those world renowned classics/records that thousands of people are this moment are listening to.

It may not be a rational response, but I really believe that the death of Obama would be HUGE, despite the world having only really known him for a couple of years. The world really is in love with the guy (for some reason).

Agreed. I remember seeing the celebrations around the world on TV when they announced he was elected President. Crazy stuff.

The only other person on earth that can gain as much attention as MJ when he dies is The Pope. In fact, The Pope dying will attract more attention than MJ. Being the head of the biggest religion on Earth is seriously business.

I don't know about that. Both atheists/nonatheists cared about MJ, only non-atheists will care for the Pope.

I know I wouldn't really care as much if the Pope or the current president suddenly passed away. They didn't leave ANY type of godamn legacy, they haven't left the trace that Michael did. They are nothing in comparison IMO.

Maybe John Paul II if he was still alive, but NOT this current pope.

But with Micheal Jackson, my friends, parents, even grandparents liked his music, he/his music reached out FAR more than anyone else did today.

Edit: These people would create a buzz, but certainly not on his scale:

Hulk Hogan
Clint Eastwood
Carlos Santana
Prince
Bob Dylan
Elton John
Obama
Paul McCartney
Eric Clapton
Michael Jordan
Madonna
Bruce Springsteen
Aretha Franklin
Celine Dion
Willie Nelson
Mariah Carey
Whitney Houston
Bono
Eminem/50 Cent/Kanye/Lil Wayne ( arguably the most popular hip hop artists for the teenish generation, not many teens know about the greats like Rakim/KRS1 )
Denzel Washington
Tom Hanks
Will Smith
Harrison Ford
George Clooney
Mel Gibson
Jackie Chan
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Tom Cruise
Oprah Winfrey
John Travolta

Say wot? People are always worshipped more when they die on the rise to fame. It's like when rock stars kill themselves; people say "Look at what great things he was never able to reach!" before they have time to fuck up their career.

Bill Gates is just as well known as MJ; now that Obama is the president of the US he'll probably create as much, if not more, international buzz as MJ. My vote is for Bill Gates though.

PS: Who the hell knows Oprah outside the US ... Seriously ?

You underestimate the devotion of religious followers for the largest religion in the world. To them The Pope is a demi God. The celebrities you listed are mere humans. While I know their names, I wouldn't blink my eye if those people died. But if I were a devoted catholic and the pope died, I would cry my face off. Did you see how many people attended Pope John Paul II's funeral? 4 million people in Rome. 4 million. How many people will attend MJ's funeral next week? Maybe 100K at best?

The Mass of Requiem on 8 April was said to have set world records both for attendance and number of heads of state present at a funeral. It was the single largest gathering of heads of state in history, surpassing the funerals of Winston Churchill (1965) and Tito (1980). Four kings, five queens, at least 70 presidents and prime ministers, and more than 14 leaders of other religions were attending alongside the faithful. It is also likely to have been the largest single pilgrimage of Christianity in history, with numbers estimated in excess of four million mourners gathering in Rome. From 250,000 to 300,000 watched the event from within the Vatican walls.

I can agree with John Paul II's death being a larger one because of that fact ( religion ) but the CURRENT pope? Most people don't even know his name.

After watching the bashir interview and seeing how crazed everyone of all ages was around him in the US and in europe, I don't think there is anyone close in popularity and 'belovedness' as michael jackson. People were just stupid for him.

Closest would have been Michael Jordan while playing with the bulls in the late 90's.

Popular is one thing, loved is another. Gates and Obama are popular, but not remotely as loved.
