...without using somekind of feature in an IM program?

No web space, no FTPs, just a program that's solely for that purpose.

Carrier pigeon and some sort of flash/memory card.
/thread

(actually, hosting a server may be a better solution. Either that or you could always try sending it via email. Some services have a pretty high storage/transfer limit)

Sure you both use modems. Set his to answer mode. Use a terminal program. I suggest Procomm. Dial his phone number with Procomm. You will be bypassing the internet in it's totality. Set your transfer protocol to kermit or z-modem. You both have to have the same protocol. Upload file directly to him.

Many gigs worth.

I see many different opinions in this thread. AIM can support this, of course, just wondering if there was something more devoted.

I'm sure the different FTP/Filezilla suggestions are the best, but I don't know anything about it. :( Care to give a brief overview?

I haven't tried it yet, but I've bookmarked the page for WASTE for when I'll want to do this:
http://waste.sourceforge.net/
Basically, it's PRIVATE peer 2 peer software.

If you don't wanna do that, i can also vouch for the usendit.com free service

I wonder if Pynchon can sue them.

scp is secure, and copies from host to host, though unless you are both running unix, I don't know how you wourd go about doing it.
