If they could sell cheaper players, I bet people would buy them and then feel compelled to pay for the more expensive BluRay discs.

I almost threw up when I saw "Witless Protection" at two stores -- one for $40 and one for $35 dollars. I could almost justify spending $30 on a good movie, but $40 on WITLESS PROTECTION??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

And if you ask me, it is doing better than fine which is starting to piss me off. When new releases come out, the Blu-ray version is always sold out, while the shitty DVD version is available by the truck load. Yes they sell way more DVDs than Blu-rays, but however many Blu-rays they get in, they sell out. Great sign for Blu-ray, bad sign for me. I'd rather have Blu-ray stay a niche with just enough revenue to keep the studios happy, but prices high enough that not every Joe Blow can have one. :)

And let me tell you, that $79 Blu-ray player you found at Newegg doesn't play Blu-rays by itself. You'll need a PC and the HD software which will run you a tad over $79. Any other genius comparisons?

My ~$99 bluray/HD drive came with the software, and I already have a PC. :)

And like every other "better than the jones" wanna be's you get to the real reason.

Why do you want to deprive other people of something? Why does that make you happy?

It's ridiculous.

But if the price goes down everybody can afford more...

See the win-win scenario there?

No, a win scenario is you making good decisions in life so you can afford luxury goods like a Blu-ray player. Not everyone deserves luxury items. A Blu-ray player isn't food. You don't HAVE to have it. Think of a nice Blu-ray player (or any other luxury item) as a reward for someone that made good choices in life. And if you didn't make good choices, you don't get rewarded. Sorry. Thank you for playing.

thats what gets me. $30 disc where the regular are $14 just does nto make it worth it.

I don't even think $14 DVDs are worth it. I might pay up to $20 for a good blu-ray movie, $15 for an okay one, $10 for a shitty one. I won't pay more than $10 for a DVD

You guys are entirely missing the point of the conversation just to flex your elitism. The point of the conversation is about the success or lackthereof of Bluray and the possibility of it being due to cost, whereas you're actually chastising the consumers for being poor or some knee-jerky shit.

Your (flawed) assumption is that life is fair. It's not. Making good decisions is not synonymous with being wealthy. You can be the smartest, wisest person in the world and still be dicked over by life.

All you've said is that the fortunate deserve luxuries.

You make absolutely no sense. Have you ever even heard of economics?

It is in the best interest of the company to have an optimal price point that maximizes profit.

Compare the yearly profits for all DVD players sold to all Blu-Ray players sold.

Next compare revenues from media sales between the two.

It's easy to see that the industry as a whole will be better off when prices drop.

You wishing that you were better than these people who (for some reason you've yet to define) don't wish to waste any more money than they have to is still - ridiculous

So "Sorry. Thank you for playing."

:)

the best deals I've EVER gotten were mostly all from Best Buy. You can find clerance items that aren't even old for stupidly cheap. Hell I bought a KB 1 1/2 years ago there on clerance for $59, it's still $120-$200 online (200 was retail) I've saved huge amounts shopping there. Normal prices are whatever, but their have frequent clearances with deals you can't believe. Last month I saw some WD external 2TB HD (2 drives in 1 enclousure) it was $179.

Exactly. Money != Good Choices. I've seen all kinds of people make horrible, selfish choices and have lots of money.

I'm not missing the point at all. Wal-Mart Joe thinks if a Blu-ray player is not $50, Blu-ray won't succeed. On the contrary, with prices as they are now, Blu-ray is doing great. Obviously prices WILL come down, but like I said, they don't HAVE to in order for Blu-ray to succeed. Wal-Mart Joe will just have to make do with a DVD or VHS player. Sorry.

Blu-Ray is the ONLY competitor in it's field. It's not hard to win a race if you are the only one running.

Money doesn't mean you worked harder than someone who makes less.

You are economically ignorant as well. DVD's make more money in a year than Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray wishes it had DVD's volume.

I don't care what they price it at. That wasn't the point.

THE POINT (which you ignore every time you read a post) IS:

If prices go DOWN, it is good for THE PUBLIC.

Please cut the bullshit. Don't give me this, "Money doesn't mean you worked harder than someone who makes less." I mean do I have to go point by point with you, or are you not smart enough to fill in the gaps? Jesus. Everyone knows there are exception to the rule. However, as a general rule, that is how it works. Capitalism at least. If you don't like it, well, I don't know what to tell you.

As for economics, don't even try it. I wouldn't say you are ignorant on the subject, I'd say you're just plain dumb. Blu-ray is still an evolving new tech. And with any new tech, the cost of manufacturing is high. However, Wal-Mart Joe doesn't see that. He just wants something cheap. And in order to meet the consumer's wants, a company will either have to take a loss on their equipment or cut corners by reducing the quality of the product. Either way it will bite them in the ass. So that leaves us right where we are at now, ~$300 Blu-ray players. If a company could offer it for less, they would. I said I would like for the prices to stay right where they are at now. That has NOTHING to do with what a company wants to do. Obviously it is in their best interest to lower prices, which they will eventually do. But as for now, it is what it is. And if you can't afford it, that's not my problem. I already have a Blu-ray player.

Your point sucked and you know it.

Also most of the well paying jobs are way easier than the lower paying ones. Ever had to stand knee deep in a sewer for 12 hours? Glad I don't, and I'm not afraid to admit that my life is easier than that guys!

I'm done with this thread if your non-points are all that is left in here. Numerous people have noted your elitism and I've shown your ignorance in every "supposed fact"

You should go pay twice what they are asking for a Blu-Ray Player! Then you'll be "extra-cool"!!!1111!! exclamation mark !!!

bs, sometimes its just charging what they can get away with, and sometimes its just self defeating retardation, you saw it with formats like dvda sacd..over charging and over protective. the bluray doesn't cost that much to make else sony bluray games would make almost no profit for developers or games would cost double.

LOL, it's like a kid yelling, lalalala with his fingers in his ears. First, I already explained the economics behind the prices you are seeing now. You just don't want to hear it. Again, not my problem. Do you throw fits like this when people say you can't afford a Ferrari? I can't either, but I definitely don't think I'm owed one.

What? Seriously? For the price for my wife and I to go to the movies, I can buy two blu-ray movies. That's what we do now...instead of going to the movies, we go and buy a movie on blu-ray and watch it at home...

much more comfortable to watch at home (no reclining sofa's at the theater).
Sound is better (optimized for my exact seating arrangements)
Video is better (1080p on a 52" Samsung from about 10 feet away!)
No annoying kids or punk teenagers (or college kids, or worse...military people) to be loud and make trouble.
I can pause the movie and take a piss/get a drink when I want.
Popcorn and drinks are relatively free compared to Corporate Value packs (when popcorn and a drink cost more than the movie, that's when I called it quits!).
and most important of all...

I CAN WATCH THE MOVIE IN MY UNDERWEAR!!!! (And no get arrested like I would at the local mega-screen-super-theater)...
