It's funny that now the lefties are claiming that income equals relevance. If that's the case then they should be enamored with Rush, but instead they hate him.

Gee, I wonder if it has anything to do with that fact that Maher reinforces their preconceived notions...

Edit: And my wife has met him and says that the guy really is a douchebag. It's not just an act, he really is a self-absorbed prick.

Acdcording to Bill, she said the same thing about you!!

I'd be disappointed if she didn't.

One thing about your wife, she doesn't disappoint. ;)

Damn, I guess I should send you the child support bill then. Hope you've got a good job.

I don't see how he could possibly be a douche. I mean does a guy that does something like this seem like a douche to you. I think not

I'd bet my house none of those 4000 employees had anything to do with the downfall of the financial services industry. It's like demeaning bank tellers for being laid off; they didn't do jack to hasten/worsen this recession.

That wasn't what was said. I mean, did you actually see or read what he actually said?

So dumb, everyone needs to express their opinion, no matter how uninformed they are.

I heard exactly what he said and that's what he said. He said they were worthless jobs and used the fact that they were part of the financial services industry as an excuse for why we shouldn't care. In fact, I watched it live while you probably caught the rerun.

You were in the studio audience? Cool. What was it like? Does someone really say when to applaud?

If that is the case, then it is even more strange that you didn't get what he said.

He explained that he felt the financial service industry was way too big for an industry based around creating debt and leveraging. That is all.

Last time I read anything on the topic, he was driving a Prius.

Personality wise I think he's a douche and an extreme snob but he's probably the most intelligent of all the political/news comedy types and makes for a hell of an interesting show IMO.

And he's bang on about the credit card industry as I don't think most people realise the kind of stuff that they do. As an example my Visa reduced my limit below my balance few months back and charged me a shitload of penalties, and bumped up my promo rate by 10 fold as a result without any notice. I could list quite a bit more but the issue isn't that they charge a high rate of interest after a while, it is all the deceptive nickel and diming which leads to much higher rates than advertised.

Kudos to Maher, a job well done. One of the two left leaning folks worth watching(maddow is the other). I loved his monologue last night on how worthless obama is since he's done nothing about healthcare, the best part was when he said obama needs to be more like bush - the lefties in the audience gasped, it was hilarious...My favorite part of the show was when he called out the NAACP douche for trying to tie in Troy Davis's plight with the discussion on socialism...

OT, did anyone else notice Larry King's red eye? Hope it's nothing serious.

Never expected Maher to say that. Kudos to him for sticking to his principles and not being blindly partisan in this rant.

Video of it here.

Maher is a douchebag to the highest magnitude. I am very far to the left, and I cannot stand this guy. Every word he speaks comes out covered in slime. He speaks about everyone else as if they are below him intellectually and morally. He is a blowhard and a malcontent. The man is a failed comic and he knows it. His opening monologues are pathetic; he has to chastise his audience for not getting his jokes or not finding them funny.

A few weeks ago, I watched a segment where he was railing against "big food" with some former FDA official. They were comparing the food industry with the cigarette industry and discussing its negative aspects in society. The scientist stated that we now know that sugar, fat, and salt make people crave food and the food industry is using those ingredients to basically trick Americans into eating their products. Well, no shit Sherlock. People know that junk food is junk. Its not as if there is some giant conspiracy against the American populace by food manufacturers. Every ingredient and the caloric information is clearly labeled on the packaging. Just shut the fuck up already.

So basically you watch his show, agree with him/his points, and aren't aware of that fact yet.

except maher is intelligent and doesn't need to scream at other people/cut off their mics in order to 'win' a debate?

Rather than discuss the points you made, I'm going to point out to you that you did not understand Maher's point.

Our society has let an 800 pound king kong grow over our nation's economy. In recent times the financial industry has earned 41% of profits in the economy.

That's an *overhead* industry not actually making goods or services for consumption earning 41% - with manipulations that led to the major financial crash.

So, I think one of his points was, 'the financial industry is downsizing? Good. That's their no longer tying up 4,000 people and freeing them to do something productive.'

It wasn't an attack on the people, but the financial industry.

I don't think his point was very well thought out, but it seems his heart is in the right place.

As for Maher overall - I'm a lukewarm fan with mixed views on him but watch his show for the guests. It's an unusually good forum.

I guess you live in magical fairy land where there is no risk in any business venture, supply and demand of commodities are 100% predictable and constant, and banks freely give out money at zero interest to anyone? Seriously how naive are you that you fall for this baloney?

Non-sequitur. Nice. You both specifically nullified each of his points with thoughtful analysis and laced subtle humour so that the rest of us get to laugh at how much of an imbecile he is.

Good job!
