not to be unsupportive, but...

...this complaint has been made by EVERYONE on EVERY forum/coffeeshop/cafeteria/living room/etc/etc EVERYDAY.

if you're going to b1tch about the most overdiscussed topic on earth, atleast try to get something constructive out of it... like what bands do you like? then people can actually make some suggestion and we won't have this unfocused discussion yet another time.

Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Jesus.

Rock, Alternative, Metal.

Happy? My post was generalizing EVERY music area sucks btw.

Mainstream music is crap. You have to look for the good stuff, which can be hard to do at times. One method I do at times is go to the website of a band I like and then follow the links on their pages and listen to the music from the bands they linked to. Other times, just listening to compilations that I got for free at a concert (or seeing a band at a concert that I went to for another band). In some cases, certain programs relating to music have chatrooms with real people that can suggest some good stuff that you might not have heard of before.

I think the lyrics of most mainstream music (I don't want to generalize, because there is some good stuff out there) sucks. That isn't anything new, though.

I agree with the GNR part, although the Red Hot Chili Peppers are still putting out some great tunes as well. On their last album there were a ton of get songs. Snow, Wet Sand, and Desecretion Smile can compare with any of their previous releases.

Also, I think people will be pleasantly surprised with the new GNR material once Chinese Democracy comes out. I know people will say "it's not slash so it's not GNR" but those arguements only go so far. Everything Axl's ever touched has turned to gold. Also Izzy is said to have worked with Axl on the new record. As a matter of fact the song Better is rumored to be the first single off the album, and it's an incredible song.

Army of Anyone (STP + Filter)
Clutch (blues + hardcore + rock + black sabbath)
Death From Above 1979 (fuzzed out bass + drums + weirdness)
Dog Fashion Disco (Faith No More-esque)
Hopesfall (once a hardcore/metal band, now more akin to Hum)
Chevelle (thier latest stuff is actually decent)

Metal:

Byzantine (pantera + lamb of god + prog)
All That Remains (probably metalcore, but great songwriting and guitar playin)
Between The Buried And Me (dream theater + death metal)
Dillinger Escape Plan (insane)
Glassjaw (intense, melodic, original)
Mastodon (sounds just like their name... a big friggin beast)
Nothingface (heavy, yet pretty accessible. haters will call them nu-metal)
Protest The Hero (mars volta + spastic metal + musical theater)
Sikth (insane)

anything in the 90's is new music IMO. It's not that dissimilar to anything more recent.
The eighties had a few good moments; but the revolution died in the 70s. :)

EDIT: Add Rainbow to the list of great 70's music.

uh...none of that is Rock. it's all metal.

I actually agree with that (original statement). I'm a Floyd/GD/Jam band nut...but I love the classics. I think GnR was phenomenal. I don't really listen to them, but they were the quintessential 80s band (out of the ones with legitimate talent). I think bands like Pearl Jam and Radiohead are also really damn good, but I never listen to them.

I'd say I spend most of my time listening to GD/folk/Jazz/Classic Rock. In a lot of ways, the best music was ~1910 :p

if you havent heard sts9 check them out.

 although disco biscuits get a bit tedious to me, and darkstar orchestra is just a cover band. The Zen Tricksters put on a far better show than darkstar--it's actually improv. Darkstar just tries to reproduce a taped show as flawlessly as they can, which is anti-GD :)

Sometimes I wonder to myself if Pearl Jam had other people write their first album, because they haven't come anywhere close to the quality of Ten with any of their albums since.

They grew old, I think.

Vs had some awesome songs - Indifference, Leash, Daughter, Elderly Woman, Dissident are as good as the best songs on Ten.

Vitalogy - Nothingman, Not For You, Better Man, Immortality, Whipping, Corduroy. 6 A+ tracks out of 14. They took a hit here.

No Code - I only really like Red Mosquito, Sometimes and I'm Open

Yield is awesome. Tied for second favorite album along with Vs.

Binaural was lame. Riot Act was okay in places. Pearl Jam is growing on me.

Yeah, my money is on they are not aging very well.

If you're talking about rock music, I agree. Clearchannel also isn't helping either. Rock was pretty solid in the 90s, but as the decade rolled around, it degenerated into mostly emo garbage.

If you want to find good rock music, you'll have to hunt for it now. Like others have said, independant/unsigned/local bands are your best bet. Tons of websites out that collect that sort of music for free, legal streaming. It's the only way.

i Love MUSE.

i like their stuff from 3 albums ago best though. pre-absolution is where you'll find the best muse stuff; but not that i'm saying i don't like their newer stuff. i love almost all their music.

oh ya, check out http://www.wazee.org

they have a great playlist, and plays indie from time to time. it's my absolute favorite internet radio next to NPR's Sound's Eclectic and KCRW's online broadcasts.

If you live in SD, become a regular @ the Casbah, or the House of Blues.
On Sunday evenings tune into http://www.fm949sd.com online broadcast for their "Local San Diego" program (they play only local bands, and interview up-and-coming bands. They are up and coming for a reason; they're very talented).

If you listen to those stations, you'll fill up your mp3 player, or your CD stack VERY VERY fast, and you'll never get tired of any new stuff again.

It's been sucking for years, just more now than ever. I don't even know what the hell is out there since I don't listen to the radio, the MTV et al no longer show videos, all their crap is about spoiled emo teenagers. I'm finding myself digging back to original David Bowie now...

glad i read further because I was just about to post something similar. US music sucks now. A lot of European bands are great, especially if you are into power metal or prog rock type stuff.

I'm a symphonic metal person myself.

How many people have become wildly rich and famous only to learn they don't want it but can't go back? In a world like ours, success is failure. Jesus said "Woe to you, when all men speak well of you" a long time ago, but few listen.
