i'm glad I live in SD where there's a rather large indie scene. you should look into the "popular" indie stuff.

and ya, song writing back from the 60s, 70s was the best(popular music wise). it felt like it truly came from the heart.

but for new music, look to independent artists. It's pretty hit or miss...so you have to hit the local clubs to see who's doing what gig...soon enough, you'll find someone who's actually insanely talented. Also, stuff from europe and such is great. listen on when your local NPR station airs sounds eclectic. great place to sample out bands, and see which CD's to buy and stuff.

My son, who is 27 years old is listening to lots of good old school. :)

wow, I had no idea you were such an old fart. ;)

glad i read further because I was just about to post something similar. US music sucks now. A lot of European bands are great, especially if you are into power metal or prog rock type stuff.

There's good music being produced today, it's just not in the quantity that it was made in decades past. That said, I love the fact that I have such a large library to choose from, decades old music to the current stuff. We didn't have so much to choose from back in the 70's and 80's

not to be unsupportive, but...

...this complaint has been made by EVERYONE on EVERY forum/coffeeshop/cafeteria/living room/etc/etc EVERYDAY.

if you're going to b1tch about the most overdiscussed topic on earth, atleast try to get something constructive out of it... like what bands do you like? then people can actually make some suggestion and we won't have this unfocused discussion yet another time.

I can stomach Paradise City, Sweet Child 'o Mine, and Locomotive, but nothing else.

Add Estranged, Civil War, Breakdown, November Rain, New Rose, Patience, Since I Don't Have You and Coma to the list.

I've kinda fallen back to country music because I've found alot of fresh and good artists there. Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Josh Gracin, Josh Turner, etc...lots of good stuff in country.

It sucks. I used to listen to our Rock alternative station here, but lately the new stuff is terrible. The older bands that have been around will occasionally come out with a good new song. But the brand new bands are friggin terrible. They're all starting to sound like Blink 182 to me.

did you listen to country much before? it may be new/fresh because you don't normally listen to that genre.

I listened to it on and off growing up. Grew up on alot of Garth, Reba, Brooks&Dunn, I do like the current country though. Alot of it is very laidback, like Kenny Chesney, but alot of it I just find good music, the rhythms, instruments, etc. Or in the case of Carrie Underwood as damn good voice!

Look up Julie Fowlis (i'm pretty sure thats her name). She has an amazing voice. She sings traditional irish songs (in gaelic). I found her through myspace last night.

Mainstream music is getting worse and worse. Even stuff that wasn't mainstream before is now because someone's always looking for "the next big thing" (pathetic emo crap as of now) and there's bands that are in it soley to be famous and make a bunch of money. If you listen to no-talent bullsh!t like that, then yeah, it would seem to suck. Gotta look harder for bands that have talent, don't take themselves so fvcking seriously.

I have no problem with the local radio station's choice in music to play... although maybe it's just that my radio station is better than yours!! It could so kick your radio station's ass :Q

Actually, on a more serious note (heh, note)... you can listen to them online... mostly rock music but the DJs are pretty good: http://www.925kgb.com .
