I got halfway through writing up a post before I realized that the thread was two years old and I had already posted in it. :p
Yeah, I was going to post too, but I had already said what was on my mind back in 2007. ;)

haha, me too. In fact, I had an idea of what I was gonna Post, then read my Post that said pretty much the same thing, noticed I posted it, then realized this thread had been dredged up. :laugh:

Not just you, visually it looked pretty good for the first 15 minutes. But it got boring after about an hour, to me. I did like Crysis though and played that more.

Acting/story were meh. The game was a lot of fun..especially when it came out. The action was great and you had a lot of freedom. I remember a lot of unique situations occuring because of the freedom and the physics/vehicles. Fun times.

First time I played it, I only got a little ways in and then the Trigens started attacking and I quit and never got back into it. Then I tried replaying it again a few months ago and I quit again near the beginning and never got back into it. I doubt I'll ever finish this game.

I've been ragging on Far Cry since day 1. It won't even let me save the game? Bad game is bad.

Save game feature was included with the game. User fail?

how to save the game in Far Cry
Copied from another forum.. really works great

Find and edit "DevMode.lua" with wordpad or equiv. Add these two lines to the end of the file:

Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Save('quicksaved_game');","f9" ,1);
Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Load('quicksaved_game');","f10 ",1);

Use -DEVMODE on shortcut launch. You can quicksave with F9 and quickload with F10.

P.S. (Put the -DEVMODE after the quotes)

example: ... farcry.exe" -DEVMODE
IT'S JUST SO EASY! Why doesn't every game require me to edit config files in notepad and run the game in developer mode?

CNET's review of Far Cry
The game uses a checkpoint-style save system, so you can't manually save your progress. If you die, you'll start back at the last checkpoint, which only takes a few moments to load. The inability to quick save the game isn't as annoying as it seems, since the checkpoints are generally spaced within reason. However, there are a few moments where it feels like the checkpoints are few and far between, which can be frustrating when you die and have to restart. At any rate, publisher Ubisoft reports that a quick-save feature will be added in a downloadable patch for the game.
So they wanted it in the game but intentionally left it out of the shipped version? Thanks.

I LOVE Far Cry every time I start up a new game every year or two.....until I get to where you first meet the trigens. Then I quit the game and look forward to when I'll play it again in a couple years.

I bought far cry 2, it looked like a lot of fun but I just haven't been able to get into it. I'm not sure what it is, but it drives me crazy after about 10-20 min of playing and I just have to stop, I've had it for about a month and I'm less than 10% into it.

We're talking about Far Cry 1, Far Cry 2 is a terrible game IMO.

Horrible gtaphics, even worse game play. On the bright side, made me finally swear off FPS's forever. In that regard, a major achievement exceptionally well done.

I thought it was pretty decent. Different people have different tastes though. But I'm surprised you thought it was too hard, I'm pretty crap at games and find lots of games too hard (there's a long long list of games where I never got past the final boss, starting with Quake!). But that one I didn't find that tough.

There was nothing really remotely groundbreaking about the Far Cry (aside from the graphics I guess - I remember it raped a lot of PCs back then). I don't even remember what the story was, and the voice acting was bad but comical (think Resident Evil). However, it was a fun and pretty game to play.

This. ZC's comparison is spot on.

IdaGno lost forum cred because of this post..

I was playing before the save patch was available and if you didn't make it through a section you had to start at the beginning. And if you raised your head an inch every merc in the area would gun right for you. It was a very difficult game. I couldn't beat the end without godmode. I understand after they patched it they adjusted a lot of the balancing issues.

1. The game was AMAZING when it came out. The water and tree effects were second to none. It still looks better than 90% of games released for any console today, and it came out in what, 2003/2004?

2. The game STILL is very good, and it was challenging while not being too hard.

3. Why was this thread revived after two years?

Far Cry was the first game since Doom II that I needed a cheat to get past. On 'Hard' there is one of those 'on rails' sections near the end where you have to be a gunner on a jeep while someone else drives. There was no way to survive it. You couldn't take cover and someone eventually would headshot you for an insta-kill.

I used the save cheat and made it through the rest of the game. Other than that, I don't remember having an awful time at the game. It was really really hard in a day that makes games easier and easier. It had some genuinely great moments and some nut-crunching bad ones too. It took me a couple of tries just to get all the way through and keep my interest up.

FarCry + HDR = awesome graphics

Even today the game still looks great. And the pistol sounds amazing.
