Is it just me, or was Far Cry a terrible game?

Question: how do in-game ads appear?

Definitely one of the top single player games of all time IMO...

It is difficult at times, but that is what makes it a good game. It's not simply a run and gun type game. You generally have to survey the situation and get an idea of the number/type of enemies you're up against before even firing a single shot. I hope Crysis can can keep up with the precedence Far Cry set.

It was pretty good, but not as amazing as it was hyped up to me. I ended up getting it when it hit "bargain" bin price ($20) here. Had fun, multi wasn't bad for standard CTF and singleplayer was intriguing up until the last few levels. I don't recall any issues with difficulty. I liked the scale and "freeform", vehicle usage, though they seemed a bit gimmicky.

I'm fine with not just spraying and praying. This was beyond that though (and sometimes there were no alternate routes).

Funny, the first 1/3 was my favorite
The person you quoted said they didn't like the last third ;). I also liked the first part.

Load screens. 15 second video ad before it actually loads. At first it was EVERY TIME YOU LOADED, so each time you died, you got to watch the same 15 second McDonald's ad, but after the first few days they started to happen less often. I'm not sure if they ever happened when I played the game non-full-screened. I did quickly start hitting the mute button on my keyboard though, because the ad gets obnoxious pretty fast.

Hrm... I know I played this game...but I don't remember anything about it. And I have a relatively good memory too... that probably means I didn't like it either... or I've just played way too many games since then.. :) Since it's a freeby..might as well dl it... :)

As for the ads- do a google search on how to remove the ads... ["free farcry ad removal"].

Sorry OP but i thought farcry was fantastic, yeah ok the volcano level was difficult, easy if you can kill those damn jumpy sniper things at the side but theyre tough to hit right out of the door. The rest of the games difficulty was fine. Also if its too hard theres lower difficulty settings for a reason :p I tried playing through on realistic and got the the level called "steam" and i simply cant do it, i died umpteen times, it wasent any fun anymore and gave up.

So the moral is if you keep dying, turn the difficulty down i guess.

I really liked the level with no weapons actually, i led all the trigens into the water where they die, then walked freely to the chopper :D Took a while but it was fun watching them drown.

I liked the game... I only played up till you blow up that frieghter and the chopper comes and kicks your ass while your on a sinking ship. I swear I hit that guy like 5 times with rockets and he wouldn't go down.

All this talk got my hyped to go play it again, so I grabbed the free version...doesn't work anymore:

Update:
The promotion is now closed and it is no longer possible to play the game for free. If you are interested in further information on this title, visit the Ubi official website at http://www.ubi.com/

If it had been preceded by the hype surrounding D3 and HL2, it wouldn't have been nearly as well received IMO. The bleeding edge graphics *don't forget they added to it over time*, somewhat non-linear game play, and hilarious physics, made it a huge sleeper hit. We would have threads in the video forum where everyone posted screen shots of the funniest stuff they pulled off with the rag doll, good times. :)

I have said it before though, if I have to play FarCry one more time, I'll shoot myself in th face. ;) I played that game way too much, and explored basically the entire map on every level.

Crytek is a german company, so they probably think Americans are really like the main character.

"If you meant it to be a joke and to be funny, then you're a genius. If not, then you're racist and have bad taste"

It was good game, though.

It gets much worse after that part. That was definitely an irritating section though (that particular helicopter is invulnerable, as far as I can tell... you have to actually hit the guy directly with bullets/explosions).

So the moral is if you keep dying, turn the difficulty down i guess.
Second-easiest mode. Is there even a way to turn down the difficulty after you start a game? You can get pretty far before you get to stupidly-strong enemies and realize that the developers don't understand difficulty scales.

non-linear game play,
For what it's worth, it's really a 100% linear game with small-scale non-linearity. You can't make any choices - no matter what, it boils down to walking from point to point in a fixed order (there's at least one point where you can actually do something out of order, but if you do it doesn't recognize your progress and you can't go any farther).

I loved the game. My only real gripe is that its too short but I always feel like that when I come to the end of a great game.

I played on the easiest difficulty and the mercenaries were definitely too easy (duh, easiest difficulty), but the Trigen's were too much of a pain. I never used cheats, I can't remember exactly where I decided to quit except that it was after the level you drive across like the the entire island (that was an awesome level). I think there was an elevator shaft and then you walk down a hallway and there's a room filled with tons of bad guys that were just going to take WAY too long and way too many tries to beat, so I gave up. :p

I rule at FPS like Battlefield 2, but I suck at the ultra fast paced twitchy fingers games like Quake II...etc. I guess I suck at Far Cry. :p Generally, the graphics were so good and the mercenaries were fun to fight, but the trigens were too hard for my skills, even on easiest!

I didn't like it. I quit after a few levels. Irritating save system, cheezy voice acting, and just not too fun imo.

I didn't like it much until I started using quicksave/quickload and then it became a superb game, mainly because you could explore without fear of having to do large sections again if you died.

Not including said feature out of the box was a mistake IMO.

That game was eye candy galore. I liked the first hour of gameplay where you use subterfuge to attack camps and hunt down human AI.

I agree though that the tridents caused a unbalance in the game though. The developers of Far Cry stated in a interview at gamespot.com that they learned their lesson in preparation of Far Cry 2.

Honestly, other than the graphics, I thought the game sucked too.

I enjoyed it for the most part, I liked not being stuck on a straight path through the game. I agree the dialogue was weak at times but I usually ignore that stuff anyway (anyone remember the first Resident evil on playstation?) The gameplay was pretty good and the game looked great, one of the best FPS games of all time.
