OK, here is the deal. The reason behind lent and not eating meat is the fact that the apostles were fishermen, and their market was hurting. However, in other cultures, they can eat "fish": that do not bleed, or in other terms, have an open circulatory system, aka, no veins.

But it is a different type of meat.

Catholics give up Meat for Lent. To them Fish is NOT meat. You had a presupposition that he thought of meat in your terms. It was your own blindness that led to your foolish mistake. That and you probably insulted the hell out of him. Now you are even.

Actually it was a friendly conversation and he was not offended. I had him explain to me why he ate fish and not "meat" on Friday. I just pointed out the fact that fish is also a meat.

That doesen't mean it isn't meat.

It is the flesh of an animal, it is meat. It is protein.

Meat can also be the flesh of a nut or fruit.

You are missing his POV as a Catholic. His religon tells him it is not meat in HIS case. You can argue all day long but you miss his POV. This is akin to someone arguing with a Jew that a Pig is acceptable to eat.

Heh!

The whole time my son was growing up, he swore that chicken wasn't meat, pork wasn't meat, hot dogs weren't meat, veal wasn't meat, etc.

Cathloics think lots of things that don't make any sense. Take communion for example. You eat a cracker and and some grape juice, and it actually physically turns into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Now, not only do they belcie that, but they believe that eating thier god is a good thing. Fish being a vegetable is minor in comparison.

So in otherwords, the Catholic POV is wrong? I would have never imagined.... :D

I think the Catholic coworker could have done a better job explaining where he was coming from. If he explained what was explained here, I'm sure ViperXX wouldn't have even posted this.

Tell your co-worker to point out where on the food pyramid fish belongs.... and just to make him look stupid, ask him to first ignore the image of a fish in the meat category.

:D
The food pyramid angers me.

Take two aspirin, drink something from the Dairy category and call me in the morning.

I'm serious. It's a bunch of crap. It is extremely general, and not even remotely accurate.

It doesen't differentiate between good and bad fats, or carbs. Most dieticians agree that the food pyramid needs to be revamped. I read an article on this very subject not long ago. The new proposed pyramid does indeed differentiate between the different fats, etc. and is much better.

As if it's going to change the way us Americans eat anyway.. but still.

Besides, i don't buy it. Just because somebody believes something is wrong to eat, doesn't mean it's not meat. I'm sure Jews think pork and bacon is meat, even if they don't eat it. I just don't see how you concluded that just because somebody believes something is wrong to eat, that it's not considered meat. I don't like eggplant, and would never eat it... but that doesn't mean i don't think it's not a vegetable.

You read an article about it and now you hate it? Man... that puts fear in me thinking of all the people who read Al-Jazeera...

OK, alot of religions believe alot of things, or the do things to be symbolic. Don't know them or the people who follow it.

Ihave said it a hundred times in my life, and I think at least once on the fourm before. Just let people who are good be good people, and people who are bad be bad people, reguardles of their relision, or lack thereof.

If what clovergirl said is true, then they made the decision to say fish wasn't meat.. so it wouldn't hurt the fishermen by saying they couldn't eat meat.

Brilliant.

Well, i don't think this is a religious debate (although i completely agree with you), we're just arguing about the definition of meat.

I go to Catholic school (not catholic myself), but they are not susposed to eat "meat" on fridays durring lent. I have raised simmilar questions about fish, and have yet to get a good answer. I'll post back if I get one. All I can tell you is that on fridays I have to choose between fishsandwich and grilled cheese for lunch, not much of a choice.

If someone's religion tells them that the earth is flat, the sky is brown, and that it's okay to rape children does that still make them right?

It isn't so much that you can't eat "meat" on friday's it's that you should try and eat seafood. You aren't going to go to hell oif you eat meat, or don't eat fish, b/c some people are allergic to things, but it's just a suggested practice, and more cerimpnial then anything else.

I never said what my definition of meat is. I am simply telling you what Catholics think. I honestly think it is a meat, but that is MY opinion.
