Go ask your own coworkers. Ask them how many computers they own, and how many of them are Apple brand computers. You'll be lucky to find even 1 in 20 people who own just 1 Apple computer. At the same time, all 20 of those 20 people own at least 1 Windows computer. The nerdy guy might even have a few Linux or BSD systems kicking around.

I think Apple has a shit-ton of capital and accumulated a lot of true believers to keep them successful after the pater familius is eaten by cancer.
That being said, I don't think they will be able to maintain such a high level of success as they have now, as with the tru believers, they simply won't be able to accept that things are "quite right" when their God is dead.

In my department, both amongst staff and admins, and all the researchers, it's probably 95% Apple or die. Sucks, really.
but that's simply how the field has always been. Lots of people in this line of work have been writing code for years and years, and much of the software that is used is much easier to work with on OS-based systems.
Also, when you live in the Bay Area and especially on Cal campus--you'd be hard-pressed to find a Windows system. Of course, the people here see that as an accurate representation of the world. They really have no clue... 😉

I'm not even taking price into consideration. They may have attractive looking products but the software they all run is garbage. Mac OS has always been and always will be a steaming pile. I wouldn't use it on my own machines if it were free. Thanks to the Virginia public school system and some jackass at Apple for making their products so cheap to educators, I've unfortunately had experience with it since the early 1990s. The appearance of Mac OS greatly improved with 10, but it is still garbage in use.
Also, iOS is nothing special. itunes is a joke.

Right now, there are 200+ mac minis in the office I work in. About 40% of the people I work for have a macbook pro at home.

Apple is such an interesting company in a lot of ways. Their computers are currently surfing on the tailcoats of their Iphone/Ipod industry. (I would argue that to some extent so is the Ipad). It will be interesting to see if this keeps going. People are boarder line fanatical about Apple products (one way or another) so I don't see it going away any time soon.

For all the "work" that went into 10 over the years, all they have truly accomplished was making it look better. Sure they've added tons of 'features' that helped Mac OS from sliding into obscurity, but it is still inferior to other OSs.
But hey, it sure does look better.

Um...I'm not going to argue with you over whether OSX is inferior to other OSs...because we will get nowhere. The truth is that OSX was a completely new (or really copy of a different) OS that Mac OS9. You are correct that your comment did not state that appearance is the only change made...but clearly you have a "think" head if you believe that there wasn't a HUGE improvement from OS9 to OSX. By making the statements that you are making...it sounds like you really don't know what the true differences are between Mac OS9 and OSX.

Again, you're trying to put words in my mouth and argue a point I never stated. I never said there wasn't a huge improvement from 9 to 10. The point you're missing is that even with all those improvements, it's still garbage. They can improve it to the best of their ability and make it the best Mac OS ever, but that doesn't mean it is a good OS.
Making huge improvements to a terrible product doesn't make it a good one.
