Some monitors can handle 60HZ without too much flicker... Mind you, I think that Stephan is either blind or his monitor has a higher refresh rate and he doesn't know it.

Cant we all just get along?
all are great boards. Each one is for a different kind of person, leave it at that, everyone stop dissing the other board because it doesnt do what you want it to do.

Oh please stop it. Let 3dfx and Nvidia bash each other if they want, it just makes them look classless. Just stop the Nvidiots bashing 3dfx zombies and stop the 3dfx zombies bashing Nvidiots. At this point who cares? Neither is going to switch sides so why bother? After a little bit of research we all know the advantages and disadvantages of these cards anyway. At this point they're telling us nothing we don't already know and it's just PR. So who cares? Most of us already have our cards of choice and we're happy with them. I wish they'd just STFU and concentrate on improving their current drivers and developing their next-gen product. In other words, ignore them and maybe they'll go away! :)

I just read a couple posts above mine... Anyone using a refresh rate of 60 who doesn't see flicker should set it to a white backround (open default Outlook Express) and look just beyond the monitor (not directly at it). If you don't see flicker then you're not at 60 refresh. There's no way you can use 60 without seeing flicker. It's sooo obvious and, well, ugly/painful! :)

You guys, as bubba pointed out in his interview QUAKE 3 and OTHER FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS ARE NOT THE ONLY GAMES PEOPLE PLAY. I don't think any of us really agree with Bubba's negative comments for the competition, but really it is PR and it is his job. This thread proves he did his job since we are now discussing the V5. Again though, there are alot of people that play flight/driving sims, strategy, and other games that can benefit greatly from FSAA. As some have pointed out earlier, what might be the best for you may not be the best for a person who plays other sorts of games. Lets not forget the mac either (though I would like to forget the mac :)) and other platforms without an agp slot where a V5 pci would be the fastest currently released pci vid card. Anyway, chill out a bit - They are only video cards.

well a picture is as good as i can do to try to show you that i am using this "god aweful" refresh rate.

i could easily be running it at 85hz if i wanted to (thats as high as i can go with this monitor at this resolution), and say that its running at 60. but i wont do that cause i wouldnt gain anything by doing that.

60hz?!

Beejezus I must agree with some of these peeps Stefan... you MUST be blind if 60hz doesn't make you want to gouge your eyeballs out :)

Anything below 70hz gives me severe eye pain and headaches with 1 hour.

Guess I am spoiled. :)

60Hz some people really dont see the difference
but it is easier to tell if a monitor is flicker if you dont look at it directly
try to use your peripherical vision and you WILL see it flickering A LOT more easily
say
look at your mouse directly when your monitor is next to it
you SHOULD see it flicking a lot more easily than looking at it directly

i am happy at 75Hz+

I just wondered who thought it looked decent.... its ugly.

Stefan, please set it to 85 Hz, you're hurting my eyes, hurts just thinking about 60 Hz.
You know its been proved that theres a connection between migrane(is that the correct spelling?) and low refresh rates, personally I cant stand 5 minutes of 60 Hz, and 75 aint too great either.

Wow has this thread grown. I thought it was gonna turn into a major flame war but it still seems civilized. But i'll still stick to my guns and say that all 3 major gaming competitors are all good product and all have their merits.

I played on the 5500, gts and i currently own a radeon. Choosing the radeon over the competition was tough and both competitors have features that i also like. In the end what got me to choose the radeon was that i basically like the fact that it is dx8 ready and its kinda cool owning something that very few others own.

So in conclusion i'm saying buy what you want to buy, don't listen to PR crap whether it comes from the company themselves or fans in BBS's :)

benchmarks don't mean shiat!!, real world usability means everything and all 3 competitors work great

Stephan: I don't think that is correct. In NT/2000, that list is of all modes that your graphics card is capable of, not what it's set at....

Go to your monitor settings, on your monitor, not in the OS, and you should be able to check your refresh rate from there.

Okay...this thread has turned to the topic of monitor refresh rates. I'm fully convinced that some people, Stefan included, are CAN NOT tell the difference between 60Hz and higher refresh rates. Others like me, MUST HAVE a minimum of 85Hz or else we get eyestrain especially on white background images. I am particularly sensitive as I can tell the difference between 85Hz and 100Hz even. Unfortunately, only the more expensive monitors can handle that rate at the res I usually want on a 17". For the last few weeks I have been using my nice 14.1" TFT LCD screen on my laptop. I'm fully convinced text & internet browsing IS A WORLD better on LCDs compared to CRT monitors. There is no refreshing since the display is 100% digital. And the clear crisp, bright text makes for nice internet browsing. Unfortunately, the low contrast nature makes games and DVDs not look very good. When I go back to my 17" 85Hz monitor on my home rig, it FLICKERS so bad since my eyes are used to the LCD screen. So, let's not fault Stefan for having defective eyes. :p

moron... one hundred bucks he is really set to "optimal"..

I would bet it is set to "optimal" as well. In this case Windows will simply work out the highest refresh the monitor and video card can both do and use that setting automatically.

Stefan would have to have a really crap video card or monitor if 1024 x 768 "optimal" really was 60 Hz, and I don't think this is the case. I think you really are mistaken about your refresh rate Stefan.

Anyway, even if that was the case, you still haven't explained to me why there aren't any 24 Hz monitors out there. After all, according to you our eyes only refresh at 24 Hz right? Why do we need 60 Hz?
