Is 18% gratuity the new 15%?

This is not to discuss the merits of tipping or whether or not you like tipping. But there's this base 15% that a lot of people mention. Whether or not you think this is a minimum you should put or not is a whole different story.

I'm told that value is more like 18% now. What does ATOT think?

Oh boy, a tipping thread!

18% is a funny number. I wonder who came up with it. It LOOKS like it's only slightly larger than 15%, but it's not nearly as easy to calculate in your head. So you end up just doing 20% instead.

I often leave around 20% anyway just because I don't eat out often so it's not a big deal.

I do 20% because it's easier to figure out. I used to work for tips a long time ago, and I know how much ass you have to haul in those jobs.

I thought it was 20%... either that or Socal people are just lazy bums and found it easier to double the tax than to calculate 15%. :hmm:

^^^This, except I've never worked for tips. 20% is pretty much my cap for food, but will go higher for a bar tab. I'll deduct from that for bad service, but you have to be a real fuckup to piss me off. I'm not picky, and as long as good faith effort is being produced, I'm happy.

Sometimes I give more if the bill if pretty low. There's this fairly cheap place in town, and my bill was only ~$10 there the other day. I ended up tipping around $3, just because... well, I felt like it. Hell, I tip over 15% at buffets when all they do is bring you a drink and take your plate. 😛

we've got a tipping thread, a bacon thread, and an apple thread. now all we need is a racist thread and we'll have all of ATOT's dailies completed. achievement unlocked!

18% was the norm back in 2000. The norm today is closer to 20%. I still do 18, unless 20 is easier.

Do you really need to ask this? Not worth trying to do the math for 18%, just take the bill/10*2. Less or more based on the service.
