I suppose if all you want is mp3 capability, the mini isn't bad, too expensive but not bad

the newer ones are slightly better at sq but the old ones are pretty bad. if yuo do a square oattern test, you can tell the caps are far not up to the task.

everybody keeps going on about the sound quality difference, but wouldn't the difference be in how much compression is used on the files?

i still don't understand why would people crap on anything that apple makes, while the iriver is the same price (if not more expensive in some cases).
each of them has pro's and con's... it's like a poll of WD/maxtor/seagate. they are all pretty much the same.
Not true. You can buy an iRiver that does what an iPod does AND MUCH MORE for half the price. The difference? The capacity. But capacity is relative. I switch around what I have on my player so much.... I don't WANT more than a few gig of capacity. The more expensive iRivers give you features that iPods will NEVER have (camera? WTF!??! Color display?!! WHY?!?!) and most people could care less about.
iRiver is the clear winner between the two IMHO.

you can easily buy a rio forge and a 1gig SD card and that would be much cheaper than an iriver, plus the on-board memory, the FM tuner, and the size... that would make the rio a better buy then. iriver's are overpriced.

if iriver's are overpriced, then what is the ipod? outrageously overpriced?

the ipod 20gig and the H10 20gig retails for the same price and the 5gig retails for $250 while you can get a 6gig ipod mini for less than that. i'm not saying the ipod's are cheap, but the iriver's aren't exactly bargains either. surely i'd be impressed by iriver if my favorite thing to do is viewing jpeg on my mp3 player.

or text files
i just like how the iriver is not propreitary to its software like ipod is. Creative's are also nice this way. and I got my 5GB iriver for 230 and it came with both chargable viz usb or via the wall adapter that came with it. ipod mini's dont come with the wall adapter

Advertising on TV, especially during sports playoffs, is expensive. It can cost tens of millions for a 30 secons spot. This is why the ipod is more expensive than other players despite being lower in quality and having fewer features, though most ipod fans are still too young to fully understand the basic rules of business & money, and will actually deny that this factors into priceApple has decided - and quite correctly - that advertising > substance; that the average consumer, especially the younger demographic, buys what commercials tell them to rather than doing research.

For some reason people gloss over their own lack of objectivity.
In your case you care about interchangability and features, which is fine. YOu said you do not need a lot of storage, which is fine.
That said, people like me liek to have msot of their library with them and like to have them all acessible.
We are different, but that simply shows that these products appeal to different audiences, and aren't necessarily better than each other.

Absolutely. My disclaimer is the ol' fasion "IMHO."
I have far too many MP3's over far too many genres to EVER want to put all on one MP3 player at one time. I'm sure there's a plethora of people on the opposite side of that spectrum that would LOVE to put their entire CD collection on one single iPod.
It's all a perception of value. MY perception of value does not see an iPod as valuable.
