That's funny too since most of the people that took the time to post are pro-iRiver. :p

I love ATOT sometimes. :D

I bought an ipod from a fellow board member. two days later i sold it on ebay. i thought it was way overpriced for the sound it put out.

for my birthday, i got a creative zen touch. much better sound, imho... at a much nicer price.

i have heard really good things about the iRiver but never heard one. i am told they are the best.

:)

Last I checked, the ipod 40 gig photo was $360, and the iRiver photo 40 gig was $400. You can hack the iRiver to play video, but that involves non-US firmware.
I river has FM tuner and voice recorder.
I river is bigger and clunkier.
<shrug> Neither is bad. Anyone who claims otherwise is, quite obviously, a moron. You get more gadgets with the iriver. I do like the ipods dock...it can just sit there and charge and update songs, and the wife doesn't yell at me cause I have some ugly brick on the desk with wires coming out all over. The creatives are garbage: They're completely proprietary, and the battery on my old 60 gig zen was always dead because I'd "forget" to charge it. Nothing quite like snicking it into the dock and forgetting about it.

You can have sonz70's hot dog for less than that. See? Apple's always more expensive.

ipod

iriver

So much for the "overpriced ipod" myth perpetuated by the weak minded. Those of you who will use the FM and VR, by all means by the iriver and enjoy it.
Those of you who prefer a smaller package and a dock for your desk, get the ipod.
{shrug}
Why does such a simple choice enrage a few of you so? Get lives.....

Yar, they cost about the same. However, the iriver has an fm tuner, recording, better sound, better battery life, support for more file formats, ability to display video and full UMS support. Iaudios offer much of the same, and in a smaller package, for a lower price. What's weak-minded is blindly defending and/or purchasing an ipod because it's what you see commercials for on MTV, without doing any research.

..and if they taped a small knife to the iriver it would be an orange peeler....whoopty do...and who cares. As I said, if you spend $400 to listen to some crappy radio station on your 10000 song mp3 player, then get the iriver. A voice recorder, to me, would be nice if the mic was at least functional; most are not IME. The iriver does not have better battery life than the 4G ipod, nor does it have proven better sound quality, file formats other than mp3 and wma, I care not, with a hacked warranty voiding firmware, yes, you can watch videos on a 1.8" screen, and the ipod does have "almost" full UMS support, you just can't play mp3's that you've copied, for copyright reasons.... And the iriver is bigger and has wires coming out of it instead of a dock. Does that about cover it? Purely as a music playing device....the iriver has very little, if anything, on the ipod. Some of those extra features like FM and VR may come in handy...and if they do then buy the river and enjoy it. Didn't I just say that in my last post? sheesh....

Oh and the Creative Zen sucks btw. I had a 60 gig. Utter trash. Couldn't use it without the software CD. Heavy as brick too. Had to press 6 different buttons to navigate.....maybe not 6....but it is a primitive beast.

I've asked it before & never received a satisfactory answer: If you truly don't like features and aren't just excusing the ipod, why not get a cheaper barebones player?

Way to dodge my point about the iaudio's size though. I guess, unable to make even an outlandish excuse for that particular point (I can see it now: "The iaudio is *too* small, the ipod is the perfect size. Baa."), you decided the best course was to ignore it?

People hate ipods because they dont have them. Whats wrong with an ipod. The spin wheel is the easyst to use by far out of the other players, and it also doubles as a hard drive voive recorder, picture viewer. I have an attachment that automaticly transmits the signal from the ipod to any radio i want, on any station. Face it the ipod rocks, and if until they make a phone with all that stuff, that is as easy to navigate, nothing will compair.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the iRiver over the iPod about 1,000 times over. Apple is capable of making the product so much better, but because they can sell assloads the way it is, they won't even try.

What features?

Another myth.
As a sound engineer i know a little about sound, and the only thing that makes a diffrence is how you encode the sound when recording it. Sorry, your wrong.

EDIT: Btw, unless you have an ear for it, and around 90% of humans dont, Beyond 126bit encoding is not needed. THough yes there will be a cleaner sound above that, you then must take into account that it takes a good ammount more memory to store.

because the ipod is built pretty well and won't physically fall apart... the same can't be said for some creative and rio players (even if they are cheaper). i do agree that apple designed the ipod to be mainstream and easy to use, and thus skipping some features which are very useful to people who know how to use it (how about a damn adjustable EQ?)

so yeah most ipod buyers are dumb and probably computer illiterate, but that doesn't mean that the ipod is crap... it's nicely-designed, and it's quite well-built. surely it doesn't have some useful functions but its click wheel kinda make up for them.

it's like bestbuy. now people like to bash bestbuy, but i still like how they lay out everything in the store so you can touch and feel them, and prices aren't that bad either.
