pcmag is not a very good source for basing your opinion on sound quality. feedback from head-fi does seem quite positive, which is why i believe i-shuffle might be worth a look. now the apple camp is starting to see what they have been missing, hopefully. i dont think anyone preferred it to rio karma, so 'blows em all away' is rather blowing it out of proportion. since when were we taking these all-encompassing computer magazines seriously anyway? i am sure they have some great credible reviews on video cards as well.

I just hate ipods because of the hype thats associated with them. Although I dont see why having a mp3 player is all that important anyways. I would much rather listen to music on my home theater rather than a ipod.
Excellent point; ipod proponents are generally children, therefore prone to making childish insults when unable to win a debate. Classic case of an unwinnable argument is that the ipod is good.Originally posted by: upsciLLion

Anyone who has 15 minutes and an internet connection, and isn't a teenager, can easily see what a piece of crap I am.
Different strokes I guess, I've always thought they look like something you'd find in the Fisher Price aisle of Toys-R-Us, or something carried by say, someone wearing a chartreuse track suit...Originally posted by: dug777
the fact that they have a little something called 'style' is obviously wasted on ATOT 😛

Keep in mind most "reviews" are really more advertising than actual review, you think Amazon is in the reviewing business? You think PC Magazine wouldn't take a little "donation" for telling you what Apple wants you to hear? You need only to look at price, battery life, sound quality, features, itunes and its forced installation of QT (malware) and the fact that Apple spends so many millions on advertising to see the truth. Featuring Bose products in their stores is just the frosting on that crapcake.Originally posted by: MrChad

You know you keep saying that but ...
CNET iPod is the top-rated player
PC Magazine iPod is rated as good or better than competing players.
Maximum PC iPod is their recommended MP3 player and rated a 10.
Amazon (20 GB) Rated 4 out of 5 stars
Amazon (40 GB) Rated 4 out of 5 stars
epinions iPod is among top MP3 players, 4.5 out of 5 stars
So I just spent 15 minutes with an internet connection and discovered that the iPod is in fact a pretty decent player, according to several reputable review sites. But go on, continue to tell me that I'm a sheep to Apple's marketing. 😛

wife got an ipod, and i am dealing with that POS for a while now and here a list while i really thing that ipods SUCK:
1) itunes and quicktime
THIS ALONE gets me going since i MIGHT see that people MIGHT want to use itunes, but why on EARTH do i need quicktime too ?
Since years i try to avoid these kind of software, eg. realplayer, quicktime etc.
Just makes me angry.
2) file system incompatibilty. Well, windows ipod is FAT32, but still why does it not use a normal directory structure with filenames so you COUL just copy songs over from the PC like to another device/drive.....but NO ! Apple must do it different....i mean "different" in a VERY stupid way:
(see below)
3) ipod obviously only lists and sorts tracks according to mp3 tags, filenames do NOT exist.
So...wife has about 3000 tracks right now and 1000 of them dont have a freaking mp3 tag ! YES APPLE, this happens ! MP3s MIGHt not always have an mp3id tag !
So....have to use 3rd part software to convert filename -> mp3id tag so you can see these songs listed in the ipod.
WHY NOT JUST USE NORMAL FILENAMES ?????
4) Huge problems using any 3rd party tools like anapod, ephpod or winamp ml ipod plugin w/ a network drive on wife's laptop(with the tracks on there) and an ipod connected to *my* PC.
Select more than 100 songs and want to copy em over.....winamp crashes once in a while.....ephpod hangs/crashes....anapod just allows ONE song at a time in the trial version. Its "great" if you need to copy THOUSANDS of songs. Idiots - so...if i were to pay $25 for the full version of anapod i dont even KNOW whether it would actually work over the network then since i cant "try" this in the trial.
5) ipod doesnt work at all on wife's laptop after i got a USB2.0 PCMCIA card...just freezes up etc...
Etc..etc.....rant rant.....
How EASY would it be if it would be filesystem compatible and you plug it in and COULD copy songs from and to windows just like i do on a memory card or something ?
NO...oh..because Apple needs to sell their stupid itunes tracks with their stupid software.....because if it would just WORK without any special s/w...well apple might lose some customers buying songs using their itunes store...DUH 🙂

I knew epinions was, didn't realize amazon was user opinions - that only hurts your argument even more. Of course the average ipod user is going to like it; they're 15, their friends think it's "kewl, yo!11!1" and "teh b0mb!!!1111", their favorite TV channel, MTV, shows ads for it constantly, they've done no research on it and they've never used a competing product for comparison. Further, there's an inclination to like something you spent a lot of money on, especially if on some level you know it was too much.Originally posted by: MrChad
The Amazon and epinions sites were reviews from (presumably) users of the product.
Reading & trusting a review from a perfect stranger isn't research, it's stupidity. It's essentially the same thing as buying an ipod because everyone else is.First you say that internet research justifies your opinions, and now you're recommending that we ignore internet reviews and just look at raw specs instead?
So the ipod actually does have an FM tuner? 🙂 It actually does have radio & voice recording? 😀 The battery life specs are lying and it actually doesn't have the shortest battery life? And all the sites selling it are lying about the price too; it's actually not the most expensive player? Come off it kiddo, you look less stupid remaining silent than making such a weak argument.Anyone who's evaluated any electronics equipment will tell you that comparing manufacturer's specs without hands on reviews and testing is a waste of time.

the point of an ipod isn't to listen to 1000 songs at a time. its to have your collection at your finger tips. thats the killer app. no longer having to be limited to just a small part of your music collection when on the go, but to have the option of any of the songs you own with just the press of a button.
