Took some casual photos today, out looking at halloween decorations in a store. Thought I did a good job but 3 of the 6 photos I took have the purple haze in them. I would love to know if this i just how it's going to be I have 5 days to return my phone left.
Seems like Apple is just saying its normal (as people said they would) - but I'm curious if they're going to try and tweak it with a SW update and don't even mention it.
Symptoms
A purplish or other colored flare, haze, or spot is imaged from out-of-scene bright light sources during still image or video capture.
Resolution
Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor. Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.
why is it it so purple?
Exactly. i was getting so pissed yesterday browsing through the thread on MacRumors because almost every single post was " stop whining, even my $2000 SLR lens has lens flare man people are babies" When someone who was not an idiot would post the comparison that really shows the problem they would make excuses and say things like well it was not shot at the exact same angle at the exact same time of day so the comparison is invalid. Or they would make personal attacks on that poster. They all totally ignored the fact that while lens flare is normal, the pictures being taken with the Iphone 5 are not "normal" because they are freaking purple...
Camera
The 5-megapixel camera in the Touch isn’t the same as the 8-megapixel one in the iPhone 5. It isn’t even the same as the one in the iPhone 4S, because that one’s 8 megapixels, too. It’s a megapixel match for the camera in the iPhone 4, but that’s not the real measure at all. It’s the same lens construction as the camera in the iPhone 5, and shares its 1080 video recording and image stabilization. It has a backlit sensor. The front-facing camera is HD, just like the iPhone 5's, taking 1.2-megapixel shots and recording 720p video.
So, it’s best to call the camera a hybrid as far as iPhone-type legacies go. What pictures can you expect? Compared with any Touch ever released before, this is a quantum leap forward. This is an excellent camera for an iPod Touch, and a great one even compared with iPhones and smartphones. This is, finally, an iPod that’s also a camera. Hence, perhaps, the wrist strap.
Just a reminder of how far things have changed in just two years: the last Touch only took 960x720-pixel camera snaps and had a 640x480-pixel front-facing camera. In terms of video recording, our CNET verdict was that we still preferred using a Flip. Now, there is no Flip. This a killer portable video recorder, too. So far, it seems to be taking impressive photos and video. More to come.
So far the two most reputable sources (dpreview and CR) have evaluated the camera in an objective, non-biased manner and both were rather unimpressed over the issue. I think I'll put more stock on their assessments instead of the anecdotal and biased opinions that are flying around the web.
No haze with our two iP5s, but they're in carbon fiber cases that have built-in lens covers.
I've had had serveral iPhone 4 and 3GS and so on, and have never experienced it. I i think i know how to hold a iPhone
Last Friday i really had to concentrate not to get the pursle haze on my pictures while walking around the city and taking pictures with my gf..
Even on this where the light source is in the ceiling and behind a board the purple appears. This is a due-over Aplle.
