iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S II vs Nexus Prime

I too am worried the Nexus Prime will be too large. I already think the Galaxy S II is a bit on the large size. 4.6" is no joke.

What is this I keep reading about ICS getting rid of the four buttons? Are they just talking about the four buttons that are not physical buttons but ones "printed" on the LCD screen? I have a Honeycomb tablet, which is what ICS is based on and it doesn't have buttons permanently on the screen but it essentially does. There are still "buttons" displayed to switch between tasks, bring up the keyboard etc.

It's basically the same thing except I guess a bit cleaner looking?

The rumors pretty much tend to that the screen is 4.6" but 4.3" viewable since part of the screen is dedicated to the buttons like in Honeycomb.

If this is the case, then 4.6" is passable if on the large side. I'm hoping the bezel will be really small on this.

The curved display will help mitigate the screen size, and the on screen buttons means the display size now includes the space that was previously occupied by those buttons, further mitigating the seemingly large display.

I'm hoping that with on screen buttons we can hide them while watching videos or doing other full screen activities.

Oh of course you can. That's how Honeycomb works. You also can argue that having on screen buttons means they will be customization depending on context. So maybe a search button isn't helpful during movies so it can turn into a subtitles on/off button. However, so far I have not seen this behavior in Honeycomb. It's the same set of static buttons always.

Don't most people here root? If VZW does in fact get a bloated version, I'll just root it and put on a custom ROM. I'll probably do that on the Nexus anyway. It isn't like that is really much of a deal breaker, since they will be the exact same phone, and the process will take like 15 minutes.

Won't rooting a nexus defeat some of the point of it? I.e. earlier updates from Google? If VZW has a bloated version that's different from the unbloated (probably international) one there is chance the new ICS.x won't work on it, and you'd be stuck waiting for verizon to "approve" the update? I would think any carrier-specific version will be different enough so that the stock upgrade won't work, or am I misunderstanding how this works?

That's my theory anyway; Prime might be exclusive to VZW in the US, with bloat, and there is a pure version sold internationally. Which we can of course get here for AT&T for full price, but no carriers will sell it.

Very unlikely that any carriers will sell pure android, except perhaps T-mo. I think even the Nexus S4G had some crapware (?)

If Google releases to the Prime, but mine is rooted, it will take a whole 1 day to get that working on my phone while I wait for developers to change the right things. Let's not even think about the time it would take VZW to drop updates (I'm a Fascinate user).

I feel your pain (also a Fascinate user)

I honestly dont' care about official OTA updates. The ROM updaters are so damn fast at it, that's all that matters. The CM7 2.3.7 build just dropped a few days ago.

Well, it's getting better, but I don't see the situation changing any time soon. Android gets a good 3D game every... couple of months, but iOS gets new games every Thursday night... and a major 3D game almost every month, or every other month.

For instance, after the announcement of iPhone 4S, we've just learned that Infinity Blade 2 is coming to iOS December 1st. Android has yet to even get Infinity Blade 1.

So what? It's not as if Infinity Blade is the game everyone should be playing. That's like saying in 2001 that Xbox rules because it had Halo, and the other consoles didn't. Some people just don't care about Halo.

Sure, if the custom ROMs are fast and functional you don't need to consider what the carriers put on there. But at least from a software standpoint you don't really need a Nexus device then, since you're not using pure Android anyway. (Although the hardware features of the Prime might be unique for a while)

I still think you'd lag behind though. From what I've seen though there is still no fully functional CyanogenMod for the international galaxy S2. The reason I would like pure android is so I can get the updates from google right away, no waiting for OEMs to update their skins, or the CM team to put together a functional ROM.

But what you are missing out on in your thinking is that the Nexus is MADE FOR development. Meaning that there will not be a problem trying to get missing pieces for custom roms or things like that. The reason that CM7 is having trouble piecing together roms for other Samsung phones is because Samsung doesn't give them access to every area they need. With Nexus phones, everything they need is literally just handed over. Also, this will be running ICS, whereas if I bought say the Vigor or Droid RAZR HD which will be Gingerbread, I most likely would have to wait a while until someone figured out how to make ICS work on those devices.

Very bored, got nothing better to do than upload a cleaned up Prime image:

Well, I'd assume that not everyone cares about games either. In which case, the GPU can be totally ignored.

But if it is as you said, then Infinity Blade isn't the only title. There is Real Racing as well. There is Rage, there is Roboto, there is Anomaly, etc... There are a lot of quality titles on the iPhone that aren't available on Android. Infinity Blade is just an example.

Yep, I could care less about mobile gaming. I don't buy smartphones to play simple games, I have a computer/laptop if I want to do any gaming that's worthwhile.

Are you sure they offer turn-by-turn? I was using my friend's iPhone 4 from Anaheim to Santa Barbara, CA and just spits out a list of directions the same way Mapquest did in 2000. When I say turn by turn, I don't mean displaying

1. West on Lincoln 2.3 miles
2. Right on Arizona 3.3 miles
3. Destination on your left, 400 feet

I mean a voice says West on Lincoln and then it uses GPS to detect where you are and then when you are close to the turn, it tells you to turn right and shows an arrow.

Sprint Navigation on my old Touch Pro2 does this, maybe Sprint Nav will be available on their iphone ?

btw, it's a great navigator, it's nice to have it and google maps and bing maps; sometimes one or the other has better info.

It seems Google likes to release new versions of Android on Verizon for some reason.

Android 2.0 and 3.0 debuted on Verizon.

sounds ludicrous, but maybe it goes along with VZW rejecting the SGS2 for this.

Also, could be a x # of Months exclusive for one carrier?

Thats what I'm assuming it will be. VZ will get it for like 3 months, and then perhaps an unlocked phone comes out.

The 1.2Ghz dual core indicates a 4430 OMAP which to me is a big disappointment as that means its a 300Mhz SGX540 GPU mostly likely. That GPU is already getting long in the tooth, as its been out for over 1.5 yrs in phones, and now it needs to be pushing 720p resolutions. The ip4s will absolutely crush it in graphics benchmarks. Me no likey

1.0, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 were on TMO. Most people wish Google would launch more Android versions on Big Red.

Seeing how no iphone 5 yet it's possible....But wouldn't make economic sense for Apple.

Of course nothing saying Apple couldn't also release a 5s at the same time 🙂

i have no idea how you could make a statement that it wouldn't make economic sense for apple - i would assume if it is a sprint exclusive it WOULD make economic sense for them (as in sprint pays apple a shit ton of money for exclusivity)
