Picked my 64gb wifi from the apple store in Montreal this morning. I arrived at 6am and there was already a huge line ahead of me (like 50 people).

I migrated my data/apps, played with it a bit, and watched a couple 1080p trailers. This thing looks gorgeous! I love browsing websites without having to zoom in to make the font legible.

And one awesome feature that tends to get overlooked in reviews/impressions is the 1gb ram. My apps rarely close now, no matter how many times I switch, which makes multitouch gestures very useful. And safari no longer reloads pages when I switch between tabs. It keeps everything stored in memory.

I'm new to this iPad thing. What's a good case/cover to buy for it? Should I get the Apple iPad Smart Cover magnetic thingy? Is there one like this from a 3rd party for the iPad 3 that covers the front and the back?

If I buy a case should I buy the cover too or should I just buy one or the other?

Just a fair warning - those back only cases for iPad 2 DO NOT Fit perfectly on the iPad 3rd Gen!!! The 3rd Gen is 2mm thicker and it does make a difference! Even when Apple says that the iPad 2 accessories fit it really does not and requires some elbow greese to get it to fit... go with a portfolio for a professional look (some portfolios/leather have that magnectic thing that make the iPad sleep when close, too like the smart cover)... go with the Smart Cover and back shell combo for a sleek look... I went with the Apple Smart Cover and back shell combo... be careful there are fake smart covers out there!

I'd recommend checking out Monoprice. They have a decent selection of various case/cover types and the prices are a lot better than what you'll pay at an Apple store or even most other retailers.

As far as I know there aren't too many iPad 3 cases yet, so depending on the particular case you get, the fit may be a big snug. I'd wait for some good reviews to come out regarding older iPad cases fitting the new iPad before jumping on anything.

I wonder if the new Ipad 3 is worth it.

It seems because of the HD display.. more apps will require more space to fully utilize the high resolution which means it would take up more space.

Strong marketing by apple.

This can not be overstated, the display is awesome.

Does the added pixels eat away at that added RAM? I haven't noticed any performance differences between this and ipad 2.

As of right now apps that get updated for "retina" are going to require more storage space even if you have an older model.

Being that I am going to use mine mostly for book, magazine and comic reading the 16GB model will be more than adequate for me.

Someone want to suggest some good covers (Magnetic- smart turn on and otherwise) and cases from places like Monoprice? It would be greatly appreciated.

That is the reason why for the additional 512MB of ram to assist the quad GPU with the Retina Display... 1GB is more than enough to run OS, apps, web, and games... I have not experienced any lag or freezing.... my android smart phone freezes and lags a few times a day now...

I have been officially sucked into the Apple ecosystem... and funny thing is I'm enjoying the ride... already bought a few apps, and I even bought an additional full leather case (I have the apple smart cover and back guard) and a tablet carrying case now...D:

Just a heads up, I've been permabanned, will miss you guys 🙁

Ruh roh. I don't post much but I've enjoyed you here in the gadgets forum. You're probably about the only person to have a worse gadget addiction than me. 😀

On topic, I'm really trying to get used to the "warmer" color on this new iPad. I'm trying to give myself a week before I take it to the Apple store but I have some reddish tint around the edges of my screen that are really annoying. I may not make it past the weekend. 🙁

Hmm.. I'm debating whether to get a 16 GB or a 32GB with 4G.

Is 16 GB typically enough? never had an iPad before but I don't want to run out of space quickly.

For movies and such i'd likely stream.

I'd never go below 32gb. I had 1gb left on my 64GB iPad 1, so I naturally went for the 64GB new iPad. Keep in mind that retina-updated apps will only go up in size.

So I still have time to change my order to a 32GB (although I'd have to wait 2 weeks longer). You guys think I should do that even for my purposes? (mainly as a reader)

Better to have too much than "just enough" when it comes to storage IMO.

I bought the 32gb ipad 2 because I was worried about the same thing. It turns out that it was probably too much space. I have who knows how many apps installed plus few blu ray rips that I encoded with handbrake and I still ended up having to put a bunch of music on my ipad to fill up half the space on it. I never listen to the music, so I could do without it and without the extra 16gb that it's filling up pretty easily. My next ipad will definitely be whatever the cheapest storage option is.

That new display is going to make 16 gigs fill up very quickly. All those pixels are going to require extra storage.

Hmm yeah they only had 32 GB in white here locally (4G also).

I ended up ordering a 16 GB black 4g Verizon for store pickup. If i do movies at all it will be rare (i'll mostly stream unless i'm travelling, a movie or 2 would be plenty).

I'm not a huge app whore and I also have my Galaxy nexus/iPod touch (only have 2GB apps on the touch, most of which is infinity blade) that I'll store most of my stuff on anyways.

If I regret it and need more space I guess it's a lesson learned.

It's amazing that you can do that.

With just apps (3 pages), I'm down to 12GB free on my 32GB. If I didn't try to install all those apps, there might have been more space, but... I want to be able to carry everything. Chalk it up to greed, eh?

Are those apps mostly games? I've never had an ipad just a ipod touch, I just can't imagine how many apps I'd install to fill up that much space?

Yeah.

Modern Combat 3 = 1.8GB
Asphalt 6 = 1.4GB
Real Racing 2 HD = 1.1GB
GarageBand = 1.1GB
Infinity Blade 2 = 937MB

Those sizes have blown up thanks to higher resolution graphics assets.

Yeah I probably don't have that many apps, but I do have quite a few. Only the graphically intensive games seem to be space hogs and movies end up being 1-3 gb depending on the length and encoding settings. I should say that I have less than half of the apps that I own actually installed on my ipad. I prefer a clean home screen with all the apps arranged into folders on the first page, so anything I don't use gets uninstalled.

You must be looking at something different, because I'm looking at the actual .ipa files on my computer and they aren't that large....

My largest games are (by Windows' reported IPA file size):
Rage HD - 1.18GB
Dark Meadow - 891MB
Shadow Guardian - 846MB
Gangstar Rio - 827MB
Asphalt 6 - 804MB
GarageBand - 801MB
Chaos Rings Omega - 791MB
Infinity Blade 2 - 791MB
Chaos Rings 2 - 783MB
Order and Chaos - 774MB
Batman Arkham City Lockdown - 765MB
Dungeon Hunter 2 - 734MB

To note, all of my apps are up to date except for two that are trying to offer me ads in a game that I paid for. :|

I look at their actual storage occupation after they have finished installing. The ipa is like an archive so it's hard to judge the actual inflated size of an app going by its ipa. 😉

You can check each app's storage usage by going to Settings > General > Usage and wait for the list to load.

Real Racing 2 HD must have some serious compression going on then, because the IPA is only ~400mb! Although, I'm pretty sure that the IPA sizes haven't changed much. Unfortunately, I already cleared them from my recycle bin, but I recall the Infinity Blade 2 one being about the same (~810,000KB).

I'll have to keep an eye on some before and after numbers when some more apps get updated.
