Yeah this is his main question that I'm not sure about. I'm 99% sure he's talking about xvid/h.264 file formats, which I know can be played in apps like AVPlayer, but I don't know if those apps can access/open files from the Dropbox app.
Apps like AVPlayer can handle many formats just fine, the problem is that you have to use iTunes to get those videos on the iPad so the apps can "see" them. What I need to know is if AVPlayer can access a video file that you download via the Dropbox app. I'm assuming it can't, but I don't know for sure so that's why I'm asking.

Streaming is nice for when you're home, but my brother wants to take it out and about with him (trips, vacations, etc.) so that's not a consideration.
I've downloaded a .mp4 YouTube video which I'm going to try. When I try to open it, iOS should allow me to open it with other apps. Err, I don't think I own any though lol.

I'm also interested in how this works. It pisses me off that this stuff - how iOS or Android differs from a PC for the user at a very basic level - is borderline impossible to figure out from the documentation the various device/OS vendors provide. They just go "hey our device has cool features, buy it", expect you to figure it all out afterwards and you are just screwed if that particular device/system turns out to have limitations making it not fit for your purpose.

I eventually figured out that Android has a full filesystem and basically works like a PC apart from the bootloaders/proprietary computer sync apps/etc, and its apps will probably work transparently with a file sync application of my choice, and based on that I'm looking to probably buy Android - but holy fuck it shouldn't have been that difficult to find these things out.

Apple's against file systems, so there method of sharing files between apps is more restricted than what you'll find in Android, but in short you should be able to download any file and share it to any app which (I believe) registers with iOS for supporting that file type.

For example, I went into Dropbox and opened the PDF they put in there, and after it downloaded in Dropbox fully, and opened, I was able to tap the bottom right "share" button, and it would let me open it in iBooks, or Evernote.

I downloaded AVPlayer and I'm unable to share the .mp4 file to it from Dropbox, I'm not sure why.

Yup, but that's still only the first two parts of the full workflow of getting a file, viewing it, modifying it, pushing your changes back and performing cleanup if necessary so that duplicates and different versions are not accumulated on the device and/or eventually synced back to the computer. And as you say, even the first two parts do not work for all files always for some reason.

The transparency of full filesystem means I can (apparently) auto-sync everything to Android with Sugarsync exactly like I was syncing another computer, so after setup I will never have to think about sync again and can view or modify the files on the device as if they only existed there.

Yeah... shifting files back and forth isn't ideal, not right now anyway.

You don't own one, I am talking about the Galaxy Note 10.1, not the Galaxy Note 5.3.

Using the same technology, same OS, same drivers, and likely the same hardware.

And where are the links to the reviews?

Actually, since this is an iPad thread, and your advice in an iPad thread to someone that's already pre ordered an iPad, perhaps you could start another thread.

So in the spirit of keeping this thread on topic, here's some iPad benchs from Vietnam:

Yes, it's possible to 'send' videos from Dropbox to AVplayer.

I want one but I just sit infront of my desktop and cant justify paying $500 for something when I could upgrade my gpu instead. Even when Im not near my computer, I have my sgs2 with me. Someone justify a reason for me to buy one of these.

Since my HTPC became my primary computer, I spend most of my time in my living room anyway. In the living room setting, a laptop or phone is just not as good as a tablet for casual surfing while watching TV. A laptop sort of confines you in your seat, making you sit just so in order to keep it balanced in the optimal position. It's harder to lay back and relax an still use the keyboard and touchpad, and it's harder to move if you want to. A phone, even one with as large a screen as an SGS2, strains the eyes just a bit compared to a tablet. It's also harder to navigate web pages and harder to type on a phone compared to a tablet. Tablets, particularly the ipad, offer a much faster experience than any phone as well. For what they do (web surfing, book reading, etc.), good tablets are actually faster than most laptops. When I switch from my phone to my ipad it really does feel like a relief, as though I've been let out of a small box and can now surf with impunity.

I don't know what your usage habits would be, but pretty much all of my non-gaming PC time has transferred over to my ipad. I would literally rather use it than my sandybridge HTPC connected to a 50" Panasonic plasma HDTV when it comes to browsing AT forums, looking up stuff, or all those little things that make up so much regular pc time. My ipad probably sees between 3-5 hours of use every single day, so it's definitely not collecting dust.

I'm picking this guy up from the second page!

It seems like Retina apps are trickling in, and I'd guess that a number of them have been submitted.

Leading the race are Infinity Blade II and Real Racing 2, with both promising Retina support. On Real Racing 2 part, they are promising not just full Retina (2048 x 1536) support but even 4xAA on top of that. How they were able to achieve that... I think we'll know when Anand has finished running benches, which I suspect won't take longer than this Saturday.

In any case, Retina apps are coming much earlier than I thought, and it seems adoption rate would go pretty fast for the new iPad resolution.

Did store pickup just now, piece of cake, in and out in 10 minutes. Not using it yet though, need to restore from backup and no WiFi at work. Oh well.

At the Wal-Mart I went to they had chains set up for massive lines and there was one person in front of me buying one and I walked in 10 minutes until release. At the other WM in town there was about 10 people. I bought one to see if I could flip it like I did with a few ipad 2's

It just indicates both games' developers have gone for sales instead of quality. It makes no sense for a 3rd person fighting game or a first person racing game to push that res, compared to the massive amount of detail they could have added instead.

It's the cheapest route for them. Just fix a few numbers and bam, the game looks prettier.

I think that makes a lot more economic sense than adding more textures, effects, and what-nots.

I gave in and just picked one up (16GB) off Walmart.com. You can still pick up bare-bones 16GB/32GB Wi-Fi models. You'll have to wait a few weeks to get them, but it's better than waiting in line.

Just received mine from FedEx. It's restoring from my iCloud backup at the moment.

First impression: the screen lives up to the hype. I love the screen on my Galaxy Nexus as well, but seeing such high pixel density on a screen this size is really breathtaking. I'll give Infinity Blade II a spin after it's done downloading everything.

On a side note, I'm really impressed with the iCloud backup/restore feature. Everything is there, even the exact arrangement of my icons and the open tabs in Safari.

The problem is the games will hardly even look better when the added performance is blown on additional resolution.

Naturally this is true of the majority of PC games as well, but people rarely stop to think about that. Assuming I have just enough graphics performance to run a FPS in 1440p, the game would unquestionably look better if its asset quality and quantity was increased, and perhaps the rendering model altered, to such a degree that I could only run the game at 720p. But we don't get those additional assets or big rendering changes, because they cost more money and raise the minimum hardware requirements. We are given the options to up resolution, AA and effects, but all of those have very much diminishing returns. Even with new PC exclusive games, $1k worth of hardware will already give you something like 80-95% of the perceived visual quality there is to be had out of that game at any price.

On the low-PPI PC screens resolution is at least more apparent; iPad was high PPI to begin with which highlights the insanity of rendering in the new native res.

Got a black 32 gig wifi in my hands now...unopened. Will wait till I get home from work. My local Best Buy litterally had 400 of them in stock. It was a giant locked crate by the Apple display. Everyone else in town was out, so I figured what the hell I'll check BB on chance...jackpot!

Got reward zone points and 18 months 0% on it 🙂
